James Gunn Announces Plan For DC’s Most Decisive Villain, Inspired By Zack Snyder

James Gunn’s new DC Universe is beginning to take shape, but don’t anticipate seeing one well-known villain in the near future. The first phase, called “Gods and Monsters,” is planned to launch in 2025, and will include the next season of Superman and Peacemaker. The entire franchise is then expected to continue developing in 2026.

In a recent interview with New Rockstars, James Gunn addressed the possibility of using Darkseid as the main villain for the DC Universe. He explained that while Darkseid is a compelling character, using him right now isn’t the best approach. Gunn noted that Zack Snyder already portrayed Darkseid effectively, and because of the similar role Thanos played in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it feels like a path already taken.

Darkseid first appeared in a live-action movie in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the four-hour version that was director Zack Snyder’s original plan for the film back in 2017. But when Snyder had to leave the project after a family tragedy, Joss Whedon was brought in to rework the movie, and Darkseid was cut.

Okay, so Warner Bros. really tried to lighten up Zack Snyder’s Justice League – you could tell they were aiming for something less gritty. But honestly, it didn’t quite work, and the movie only made about $661.3 million worldwide. That’s when things got interesting! Fans started the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, and it actually worked. HBO Max ended up releasing Snyder’s original vision, and thankfully, we got to hear Ray Porter’s awesome performance as Darkseid restored, just as it was meant to be.

You know, it’s funny – when people think of Darkseid, they often picture Zack Snyder’s version from the 2021 Justice League. But actually, the big bad from Apokolips first showed up on screen way back in Smallville! It was the tenth season, and he was the final villain. The really interesting thing was how they did it – it wasn’t just one actor! They used several, including John Glover, who played Lionel Luthor, but it was an Earth-2 version of him that Darkseid ended up possessing. So technically, Smallville gave us live-action Darkseid before Snyder did!

As a huge DC fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Darkseid. Even though he might not be the main villain going forward, he’s connected to so many characters that I fully expect to see him pop up in future movies or shows. I’m especially excited about the Mister Miracle series they’re developing! It’s going to focus on his adopted son, but honestly, I’m still trying to figure out if that show will be officially part of the new DC Universe James Gunn is building. It’s a little unclear right now.

Okay, so here’s the latest from DC Studios. As a huge fan, I’m really excited about this! We’re getting the Supergirl movie next year, June 26th to be exact, and then Clayface will hit theaters on September 11th. Plus, finally! HBO’s Lanterns series is scheduled for 2026, and I can’t wait to see Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan officially join the new DCU. No official premiere date for Lanterns yet, but 2026 is the plan!
