James Gunn Discusses Constantine 2 With Keanu Reeves, Awaits Script

James Gunn shared news about his work on Constantine 2. The original Constantine movie came out in 2005 and featured Keanu Reeves in the lead role, along with Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, and Tilda Swinton.

A sequel to Constantine has been stuck in development for years, but recently there’s been encouraging news. Keanu Reeves shared in early October that a new script draft was completed and they were planning to send it to the studio for review.

In an interview with BobaTalks, James Gunn said he’s had conversations with Matt Reeves about a potential Constantine 2 “on and off.” While Gunn praised Reeves and the team’s talent, he admitted he hasn’t seen a script yet, even after Reeves recently shared an update. You can find his full comments below.

I’ve talked about it with Keanu a few times. I really like and respect that group of actors – they’re all very talented. However, I haven’t seen any of the script yet.

When James Gunn became head of DC Studios and began revamping its superhero films, it was announced that Constantine 2 wouldn’t be part of the main DC Universe storyline shared by films like Superman and Peacemaker. Instead, it will be released as a separate ‘Elseworlds’ project, similar to Joker and The Batman.

Things were moving very slowly on the film before James Gunn and Peter Reeves recently shared updates, with long periods of no news at all. However, with both Gunn and Reeves now talking about the script within the last month, it seems like pre-production is finally getting started.

I was so excited to hear they had a first draft of the script done in the fall of 2024! But it wasn’t just sitting there – the story kept evolving well into 2025, and thankfully, Matt Reeves was right there with Francis Lawrence, the producers, and the writers, helping to shape it. Once DC Studios gave their approval in early 2025, they went ahead and wrote a brand new script – it sounds like a lot of care and collaboration went into getting it just right, and I can’t wait to see it!

Following Keanu Reeves’ statements, it’s unclear whether the script has been formally sent to DC Studios. And even if it was submitted, James Gunn says he hasn’t had a chance to read it yet.

James Gunn and the DC team might spend the next few months polishing the story and script. But once it’s finalized, they can move forward with things like finding actors, designing sets, and choosing filming locations.

Since its release in 2005, the movie Constantine has been very popular with comic book fans. Nearly ten years later, a TV series based on Constantine premiered on NBC, starring Matt Ryan. After the show ended, Ryan continued to play the character in the Arrowverse.

Although the original show was short-lived, fans never lost hope for a return of Reeves’ version of the character. Development on Constantine 2 is slowly progressing, and while James Gunn hasn’t seen the script yet, we can expect more news in the coming months.
