Star Wars fans were disappointed to learn a film focusing on Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren was canceled by Disney. But, knowing the spirit of the Star Wars universe, fans shouldn’t be surprised that new stories are always on the horizon. Today, that hope is realized, as the franchise officially begins creating content set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
Kwame Mbalia, the New York Times bestselling author, is releasing a new young adult novel called Star Wars: The Last Order. The story picks up where The Rise of Skywalker left off, following Finn and Jannah as they continue their journey. This release is highly anticipated by fans, especially after Lucasfilm announced plans for new Star Wars projects, including a film about the origins of the Jedi Order directed by James Mangold (known for Logan), and another project led by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that will bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey.
However, as is often the case with Star Wars now, there’s a complication with how Lucasfilm is handling the timeline of the series.
When Does The Last Order Take Place In The Star Wars Timeline?

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really curious about The Last Order and how it would move the timeline forward after The Rise of Skywalker. Honestly, it feels like a pretty small step forward. The story picks up right after the movie ends, focusing on Finn and Jannah. They’re still working to free kids who were enslaved by the First Order – which is great to see! Basically, the Resistance saves a ship full of kidnapped children, and Finn and Jannah go on a mission to track down the First Order officer responsible. It sounds like a really personal story for them too, as they have to confront their own histories as former stormtroopers while trying to do the right thing.
If you enjoyed the recent Star Wars movies but felt Finn’s story (and John Boyega’s role) wasn’t fully developed, this new book offers some welcome explanation and depth. It also expands on the character of Jannah, who didn’t have much screen time in the final film. Because it’s aimed at young adults, the book promises to explore the emotional challenges Finn faces, potentially leading to him rediscovering the Force abilities he showed in the first two movies. Many fans believe Disney didn’t give Finn the attention he deserved, and this book – along with its well-regarded author – could be the start of giving him a more satisfying story.
