Disney’s Big New Sci-Fi Movie Overtakes Spider-Man Universe Movie at the Box Office (but Still Can’t Beat Morbius)

Disney is having a surprisingly difficult year at the movie theaters, and their newest film, Tron: Ares, is continuing that trend. The film, Disney’s third attempt to make a big-budget hit out of the Tron series, opened with only $33.2 million domestically in its first weekend – falling short of expectations. This disappointing result is drawing comparisons to another Jared Leto-led blockbuster that underperformed: Sony’s Morbius. In fact, Tron: Ares is currently performing worse than Morbius did.

As of today, Tron: Ares has made $104.1 million worldwide at the box office, according to data from The Numbers. While this is more than the disappointing Madame Web ($100.2 million), the film still needs to earn significantly more to surpass Morbius, which brought in $167.4 million globally.

Can Tron: Ares Beat Morbius at the Box Office?

Currently, Tron: Ares needs to earn about $63.3 million more to match Morbius‘s box office total. While it’s early in its release – entering its third weekend – it seems possible Ares could close that gap. However, it’s not guaranteed. The film simply hasn’t connected with audiences, either in the US or overseas. Surprisingly, it’s performed slightly better in the United States, earning $55.4 million domestically and $48.6 million internationally. Unlike the previous Tron film, Legacy, which was boosted by international ticket sales after a weak start in the US, Ares isn’t seeing that same global support.

The movie Tron: Ares is quickly losing momentum at the box office. It earned just $11.1 million during its second weekend, a significant drop of 66.6%. While it doesn’t have much competition from similar sci-fi films until Predator: Badlands comes out in November, it wasn’t attracting viewers in the first place. Big-budget films like Tron: Ares need to maintain strong ticket sales over time to succeed, but instead, it’s quickly disappearing from theaters, despite a relatively clear path through October.

While it’s still possible Tron: Ares could earn more than Morbius, it’s unlikely. The film made about $25.4 million worldwide during its second weekend ($11.1 million in the US and $14.3 million internationally), and those numbers are expected to decrease as time goes on. Because Tron isn’t attracting large audiences, theaters will likely begin to show other films, including new releases and popular re-releases like Sinners and Kpop Demon Hunters. It will be difficult for Tron to reach a total of over $60 million.

Honestly, when Disney made the new Tron: Ares movie, I doubt they were worried about beating Morbius! Tron has always had a dedicated fanbase, and I think Disney was hoping to capitalize on that. But with three Tron films now and none of them really hitting it big at the box office, it sounds like Disney is ready to stop making them. It’s a shame, but at least the Lightcycle Power Run ride at the parks is still super popular, so it’s not a total loss for them.
