Science fiction boasts some of the most beloved and influential films ever created, including classics like Blade Runner, Star Wars, Alien, The Terminator, The Thing, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The genre is uniquely suited to filmmaking, allowing boundless imagination to come to life on screen. Even when a sci-fi movie doesn’t fully succeed, its ambition is often commendable. Recent films from the 2010s, such as Ex Machina, Looper, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Arrival, show similar potential to become future classics.
Here are three recent science fiction movies that are consistently engaging from beginning to end. We’ll also let you know where to watch them if you haven’t seen them yet.
3) Godzilla Minus One
A follow-up to the hit film Godzilla Minus One is planned, and it’s generating a lot of excitement – possibly even more than the recent Monsterverse movies. This is largely thanks to the return of director Takashi Yamazaki.
After six decades, you might expect the Godzilla series to be losing steam. But director Yamazaki took a fresh approach, prioritizing the characters and their stories—and it really pays off. Godzilla Minus One absolutely deserved its Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, and it’s surprising it wasn’t also nominated for Best International Feature Film.

2) Predator: Killer of Killers (& Prey)
As a huge fan of the Predator franchise, I was really impressed with Predator: Killer of Killers. It definitely got me even more hyped for Predator: Badlands! Honestly, Dan Trachtenberg has been a game-changer for the series. For years, they’d been trying – and failing – to recapture the magic of the original movie, but he’s really breathed new life into the whole universe.
Though Predator 2 has some good parts, only director Trachtenberg has created films that come close to matching the quality of the original Predator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s done this with both Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers. Killer of Killers is especially noteworthy—even if you don’t usually enjoy animated movies, its clever storytelling and exciting action make it worth watching. However, it’s best to watch Prey before you see it.

1) Companion
Considered one of the best films of 2025, Companion is a smart and captivating movie that explores themes of artificial intelligence, harmful masculinity, and greed. Sophie Thatcher delivers an outstanding performance that’s sure to be recognized with awards. It’s best to watch this thrilling sci-fi film without knowing too much beforehand, as several unexpected twists will keep you on the edge of your seat. The entire story unfolds in a single location, adding to the intense atmosphere.
Though Margaret Thatcher is the central figure, the series Companion boasts a fantastic ensemble cast. Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Rubert Friend, and Harvey Guillén (from What We Do in the Shadows) all deliver excellent performances, supported by a script that skillfully blends science fiction, horror, thriller elements, and humor.
Stream Companion on HBO Max.
