Colleen Hoover, the author behind many popular self-published books, has a new project called Regretting You. The film will star Allison Williams (known for M3GAN), McKenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Dave Franco (Together), and Mason Thames (The Black Phone).
The movie begins with quick scenes showing Morgan and Jonah discovering Morgan is pregnant, alongside their partners Chris and Jenny. Seventeen years later, Morgan and Jonah are married with a teenage daughter, Clara, and live in a lavish house provided by Chris’s parents. Jenny and Jonah often visit, leaving their baby with Morgan and Jonah to watch. Throughout the film, that baby is passed between various characters with surprising frequency.
Their peaceful life is quickly disrupted by a tragic event, and Clara unexpectedly runs away with Miller (Mason Thames), the school’s popular but rebellious student. However, the film portrays Miller as more charming than dangerous – he’s hardly intimidating. From this point on, the story follows two separate paths: Clara and Miller’s budding romance, and Morgan’s struggle with her emotions, which she tries to cope with by drinking wine.
“Regretting You” feels a lot like a teen drama you might see on daytime TV – the characters aren’t very well developed (one of Clara’s friends is mostly just there for comic relief), and it has some surprisingly funny moments. The movie’s silly running joke about pizza actually fits, considering how over-the-top everything else is.
