The final episode of Stranger Things is so big it’s headed to movie theaters as well as streaming.
Netflix revealed that the last episode of its hit sci-fi show will be shown in over 350 cinemas across the U.S. and Canada beginning December 31, 2025, at 5:00 PM Pacific Time. This theatrical release coincides with the episode’s worldwide debut on Netflix and will continue through January 1, 2026. For those who prefer to watch at home, the episode will be available to stream on Netflix at the same time.

Stranger Things creators the Duffer brothers gave this comment about the news:
We’re thrilled fans will get to see the final Stranger Things episodes in movie theaters! It’s been a long-time goal of ours, and we’re incredibly thankful to Ted, Bela, and the whole team at Netflix for making it a reality. Experiencing it on the big screen with amazing sound and visuals, surrounded by fellow fans, feels like the ultimate way to say goodbye to this incredible story – it’s going to be awesome!
Following the successful theatrical release of a sing-along version of their streaming series Kpop Demon Hunters – which earned $18 million despite already being available on Netflix – Netflix is now planning a theatrical release for Stranger Things. While Kpop Demon Hunters was a full series, this is different because Stranger Things is just one episode, though the finale is expected to be as long as a typical movie.
Netflix has long maintained that it creates films and shows specifically for online streaming, not traditional movie theaters. While they occasionally showed films in limited theatrical releases – often just to meet requirements for awards shows like the Oscars – recent successes, like the popularity of Kpop Demon Hunters, seem to be shifting their perspective.
10 Unanswered Questions After The Stranger Things Season 4 Finale

1. Will Nancy and Steve get back together?
Throughout Season 4, Nancy and Steve start to reconnect and realize their feelings for each other haven’t disappeared, even after their breakup. Even Eddie notices the lingering connection between them. However, Nancy is still officially dating Jonathan long-distance, and they’ve loosely planned to go to college together. As Nancy and Jonathan spend more time apart, it becomes obvious they’re growing apart too. In Season 5, the big question is whether Nancy will stay with Jonathan, or finally admit her feelings for Steve—potentially leading to a large family! Alternatively, she might prioritize her ambition and pursue her journalism career on her own, which could be the most fulfilling path for her. Nancy’s always been driven and focused, and shouldn’t let a relationship hold her back.

2. Will Max wake up from her coma?
Season 4 was difficult for everyone, but Max faced particularly harsh trials. Vecna mentally tormented her throughout the season, and even after initially surviving, she continued to feel his influence. In a desperate attempt to protect her friends, she sacrificed herself, resulting in broken limbs and blindness. Though Eleven briefly brought her back to life, Max remains in a coma and heavily casted. Many questions remain: will she wake up, and if so, will she regain her sight? Some believe a part of her mind is still trapped with Vecna. Fans also theorize that the connection between Eleven and Max might give Max psychic abilities, potentially making her key to finally defeating Vecna.

3. How will the shadow cloud affect the citizens of Hawkins?
As the ninth episode nears its end, Vecna’s plan starts to visibly destroy Hawkins. Buildings are falling apart, plants are dying, and the air is filled with a dusty residue – likely from the Upside Down. This dust poses a threat to the townspeople, as anyone who breathes it in could fall under Vecna’s control, considering he commands everything in the Upside Down. We already saw this happen with the Demogorgons in Russia, and now we’re left wondering what will happen when a person first inhales these dangerous particles.

4. What’s going on between Vecna and Will?
Honestly, I feel so bad for Will. He’s been carrying a torch for his best friend all season, and just when he gets back to Hawkins, that creepy feeling returns – he can feel Vecna is still out there. The poor guy can’t catch a break! Even though he didn’t get a ton of screen time in Season 4, the ending definitely hinted that he’s going to be a much bigger player in Season 5. And if Vecna and the Mind Flayer are the same being, that means Vecna actually possessed Will before! Plus, fans have noticed some striking visual parallels between One and Mike, which makes me wonder if there’s a connection brewing there. I’m really starting to think Vecna might try to possess Will again – it’s a scary thought!

5. Is Will going to confess his love to Mike?
Will has strong feelings for Mike, but he’s afraid to tell him how he truly feels. It’s heartbreaking to watch Will try to express himself through conversations about Eleven, then quickly look away when he gets emotional. Jonathan seems to understand what’s going on with his brother and offers his full support, letting Will know he’ll accept him no matter what. However, Will is hesitant to confess his feelings to Mike, fearing it could ruin their friendship – a risk he may not be willing to take.

6. Will Eleven’s powers evolve beyond raising the dead?
Fans were stunned when Eleven brought Max back to life by tapping into Max’s happiest memories, effectively fighting against Vecna’s curse. Since Vecna uses painful memories to defeat his victims, it’s logical that Eleven could use positive memories to do the opposite. However, this raises questions about how far Eleven’s powers go. Can she revive others trapped by Vecna? Will Barb finally get justice? Dr. Brenner seemed determined to unlock the full extent of Eleven’s abilities at his facility – was this power what he had in mind? If so, what other surprises does Eleven have?

7. What happened to Murray, Enzo, and Yuri?
Viewers quickly grew to love Murray, and even the initially intimidating Russian guard, Enzo, became a favorite after his unlikely friendship with Hopper developed. While Russian pilot Yuri showed a moment of clarity, he remains unpredictable. Whatever happened to these characters after escaping Russia with Joyce and Hopper? They’re not central to the main story, but after featuring so prominently this season, their disappearance is definitely noticeable. We don’t know if Enzo was able to return to his family, and it’s a question many viewers have.

8. What were the Russians planning on doing with the Demogorgons?
After narrowly escaping a Demogorgon in the Russian prison, Hopper and Enzo meet up with Joyce and Murray. They then discover a secret lab containing various creatures from the Upside Down, held in glass enclosures—including a piece of the Mind Flayer itself. This raises a key question: why are the Russians collecting these monsters? While it seems logical they might be trying to build an army of Demogorgons, it’s unclear what their goal would be, considering these creatures ultimately serve the Mind Flayer (also known as Vecna). Could the Russians be trying to create their own Demogorgons, independent of the Upside Down’s central control?

9. Will the government still hunt Eleven?
Season 4 of Stranger Things also featured the US military, who saw Eleven as a danger to the country. At the end of the season, they were left behind in the desert while Eleven escaped with her friends. It remains to be seen if they will continue to hunt her in Season 5, or if they’ll recognize that a bigger problem is unfolding. Considering Eleven wasn’t even in Indiana when the major earthquake occurred, they might start to see her as someone who could help, rather than a threat.

10. Can the Upside Down be destroyed for good?
Understanding the Upside Down is tricky, as we’re still discovering its origins. We know Eleven sent Vecna there after he killed the other children in the lab, but it’s possible she unintentionally created the Upside Down itself by opening a tear in the fabric of reality. Regardless, Vecna is clearly in charge of that dimension – he’s a powerful, all-controlling force. After attempting to kill Vecna with Molotov cocktails and gunfire, the group realizes he’s nearly impossible to destroy. They’re determined to find a way, but doing so raises a big question: will destroying Vecna also destroy the Upside Down? Or will they have to settle for permanently closing all the Gates between the two worlds, preventing them from ever connecting again?
