Sonic Team Works on Roadmaps to Decide Which Game to Make in Which Year

Following the successful release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, discussed how the team decides on future projects. According to Genki_JPN, Iizuka revealed at the Brasil Game Show 2025 that Sonic Team has a plan outlining several possible Sonic games and experiences.

The team starts by creating a plan for future projects, then decides which game to develop next. After that, they assign the necessary resources. For example, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was made because the Sonic Team wanted to bring racing games back into the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Iizuka explained that they begin by planning out future Sonic games, deciding which titles will be released each year. Then, they assign the necessary development teams and resources to those projects. For example, they focused on racing games this year and are now working on the next steps in their long-term plan.

Iizuka didn’t share specifics about these plans, including how long-term they are for future Sonic games. These roadmaps probably also consider other Sonic projects that might already be in the works.

Sega recently announced that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has surpassed one million copies sold since its release in September. This news came with the addition of Joker, a character from Persona 5, as a playable racer. The update also includes three songs from the Persona 5 RPG: Take Over, Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There, and Victory.

As you might expect, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the latest installment in the Sonic kart racing series. It launched with 24 standard tracks and a roster of 23 characters from the Sonic universe, plus some surprising guests like the virtual singer Hatsune Miku. The game is known for its quick, arcade-style racing, but its main feature is a unique mechanic: players can alter the race track on the fly using portals that transport racers to new locations.

A version of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, and the game will also receive downloadable content (DLC) featuring characters from popular franchises like Mega Man, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Minecraft.
