Line of Duty icon Vicky McClure reveals how she ‘champions’ the working class with ITV’s Trigger Point

Vicky McClure, known for her role in Trigger Point, has shared her commitment to supporting and promoting working-class actors and crew on the popular ITV show, which is back for a third season this weekend.

Vicky McClure not only plays Lana Washington, an expert in explosives, but she also helps produce the show alongside Jed Mercurio, who she previously worked with on Line of Duty. She says the producing work actually takes up most of her time on the project.

A key goal for Trigger Point is to create a diverse team, both in front of and behind the camera. This includes providing opportunities for talented individuals from working-class backgrounds to enter an industry that has often been criticized for being exclusive.

McClure shared that she’s passionate about making a positive impact and consistently supports working-class individuals, both in her work and personal life. She’s particularly proud that the show Trigger Point provided numerous training opportunities, giving many people their first experience on a professional film set.

“Our industry really needs to improve in that regard because great talent is being missed.”

McClure explained that Trigger Point actively features a wide range of perspectives, which is crucial for creating relatable characters and a believable world on television.

As a lifelong moviegoer, I truly believe that the best stories come from real-life experience. If the people making a film don’t genuinely understand the world they’re portraying, it just doesn’t feel authentic. You can’t fake that level of understanding, and it really shows on screen.

A recent study by the Sutton Trust found that people with a private school education are more likely to succeed in creative fields. For example, BAFTA-nominated actors are five times more likely to have gone to private school compared to the average person in the UK.

According to Channel 4 News, people from working-class backgrounds make up less than 10% of those working in film and television. Actor Stephen Graham, known for his role in ‘Adolescence,’ has expressed his disappointment with what he sees as a dismissive attitude towards working-class individuals within the industry.

McClure agreed that the industry had very few working-class employees and suggested a comprehensive change starting with leadership in all areas to address this imbalance.

Alongside the main cast, season three of Trigger Point welcomes Jason Flemyng and Mark Rowley. The series also stars Nabil Elouahabi, Eric Shango, Kerry Godliman, Natalie Simpson, Maanuv Thiara, Kevin Eldon, and Tamzin Griffin.

Trigger Point returns to ITV1 and ITVX on Sunday 26th October 2025.
