The Harry Potter franchise is doing incredibly well. Between the new HBO Max series based on the books, the extensive audiobook versions with over 200 voice actors, and Tom Felton reprising his role as Draco Malfoy in the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, fans have plenty to enjoy – except for the long-awaited project they’ve been hoping for for years.
A new TV series will have the chance to include details that the Harry Potter movies left out, but because the story has been told before, some fans are questioning the need for another adaptation. Despite this, many are eager to see the Wizarding World expand, particularly with a prequel focusing on the earlier years – a project fans have long requested. Recently, Andrew Garfield, known for his portrayal of Remus Lupin, spoke about the films in an interview with GQ.
Around the early 2010s, there was a lot of excitement about a potential movie focusing on the Marauders and their years at Hogwarts. Fans and studios discussed Aaron Taylor-Johnson as James Potter, Andrew Garfield as Remus Lupin, and Dane DeHaan as Peter Pettigrew as strong possibilities. Although the movie was ultimately never made, those actors became strongly associated with those roles.
While answering questions from fans, the actor known for The Amazing Spider-Man was surprised by a message asking about Remus Lupin. He explained that he had just begun watching the Harry Potter movies and was behind on the series, currently on the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which features David Thewlis in that role.
“I’m really enjoying them,” he admitted. “They’re really, really good films. Really good stories.”
Despite fans hoping he’d play Remus Lupin, the actor remained undecided about the part. A movie focused on the popular Marauders group seems unlikely now, though some of the actors might reappear as their older selves. It’s uncertain if Andrew Garfield would even be interested in playing Lupin, as the character is expected to be around 35 years old. Given Garfield will be in his mid-40s by the time a potential Season 3 airs around 2029, his age could be a factor.
Another Popular Fancasting Choice Addressed the Marauders Prequel
Despite the fact that a project featuring the Marauders hasn’t been made yet, fans still passionately love the characters and often discuss who should play them. Recently, Ben Barnes, known for his role in The Chronicles of Narnia, shared that he’s frequently suggested by fans to play Sirius Black.
Someone suggested I could play a younger version of Sirius Black, which is funny because I’m getting to the age of the original character! It just shows how dedicated the fans are – they’ve really invested in the story, and honestly, to me, Harry Potter doesn’t feel like fiction at all!
It’s really nice when people get excited about your work, especially when it’s something you already loved. The characters are amazing, and it feels great that people connect me with the one I personally chose. It’s a really rewarding feeling.
