Rachel Brosnahan Not Afraid to Play Lois Lane for Years, “I’d Be So Lucky”

Rachel Brosnahan has expressed her eagerness to play Lois Lane for an extended period in the new DC Universe, indicating she would relish the opportunity to portray the famous reporter for many years. On a recent set visit for James Gunn’s “Superman,” Brosnahan discussed her role within the franchise with ComicBook, expressing excitement about potentially making Lois Lane a recurring character in the DCU. With her background from her long-running part on the critically acclaimed show “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Brosnahan stated that her viewpoint on prolonged roles has evolved, and she’s now more welcoming to be involved with a franchise across various projects. Her statements suggest a strong belief in the upcoming cinematic universe and her readiness to contribute significantly to the extensive narrative that DC Studios is constructing.

Brosnahan expressed her hopefulness when asked about continuing as Lois Lane in future Superman projects, saying ‘I’d consider myself incredibly fortunate.’ She acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the industry, adding ‘Let’s revisit this conversation in a few years.’ She went on to say, ‘This business is often feast or famine. To have the chance to return to something as iconic as this would be a blessing, while still having the opportunity to explore other roles and worlds.’ After working on a series, she never thought she’d want to commit for five or six years at the age of 26. But time passes quickly, and you often form bonds that are like family. And it’s quite fortunate to get to attend an annual retreat like this,’ she concluded.

Previously, Rachel Brosnahan starred as the main character Midge Maisel in the Amazon Prime Video series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The show spanned over five seasons, airing from 2017 to 2023. In 2018, she was honored with a Primetime Emmy Award for her outstanding performance as Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Additionally, she received two consecutive Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy in 2018 and 2019.

Lois Lane’s Importance to Superman and the DCU

The debut chapter for the fresh start of the DC Universe, named “Gods and Monsters,” sets up a world brimming with cosmic perils, superpowered figures, and grand battles. Within this universe inhabited by characters such as Green Lantern Guy Gardner (portrayed by Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and the very Superman himself (David Corenswet), a steadfast human protagonist is crucial to anchor the narrative and offer viewers an identifiable focal point. Historically, Lois Lane has fulfilled this role in the comics, and Brosnahan’s dedication guarantees that this vital viewpoint can solidify as a key component of the DCU’s structure.

Beyond adding depth to Superman’s comic book tales, Lois Lane and the Daily Planet have consistently played crucial roles. Unlike Superman who can fend off alien threats, Lois tackles real-world issues that cannot be resolved with superpowers. As an investigative journalist, she stands against corruption, injustice, and human-level villainy, often represented by Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). This dynamic keeps the story grounded in reality and compels Clark Kent to interact with humanity authentically. Brosnahan’s ongoing involvement facilitates a natural progression of their relationship across multiple films, fostering a profound and significant bond that transcends mere romance. In essence, she is Superman’s intellectual counterpart, his moral guide, and the one who reminds him, as well as the audience, what he stands for.

Superman is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 11th.
