The first episode of ‘Welcome to Derry’ is full of hidden references and nods to the DC universe – what fans call ‘Easter eggs’. Since both this show and the ‘It’ movies were made by Warner Bros., and Andy Muschietti (who directed the ‘It’ films and ‘The Flash’) directed this episode, many viewers think these references could be more significant than just fun details.
Did you catch It: Welcome to Derry Episode 1’s DC Easter eggs?
The first episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ includes numerous hidden references to DC Comics. The horror series debuted on HBO on October 26, 2025.
A notable detail in the premiere of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ is a cameo by a Batman comic. After an argument with his father, Teddy Uris is shown reading Detective Comics #298, a classic issue by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff. Considering director Andy Muschietti is also set to direct the upcoming DC film ‘The Brave and the Bold’, this inclusion could be a subtle hint at his future project.
This comic book issue features the very first appearance of the villain Clayface. He’ll be appearing in the upcoming DCU movie, Clayface, with Tom Rhys Harries in the role. Just before the movie premiered, DCU co-head James Gunn posted on social media to mark the character’s anniversary, sharing the cover of that original comic. Gunn wrote on Instagram, “Happy Anniversary to the often-misunderstood Clayface! I’m excited for everyone to see @tomrhysharries play him in the movie.”
The episode features a moment where Teddy is reading a copy of Flash #123 – “The Flash of Two Worlds” – while at the dinner table. This issue, created by Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino, is just as famous as Detective Comics #298, and both were published in 1961. Given that the upcoming It: Welcome to Derry is set in 1962, this detail feels intentional. The episode also includes a nod to another DC Comics hero, the Atom.
The second episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ will be available to stream on HBO Max starting October 31, 2025, and will then premiere on HBO on November 2nd. After that, new episodes will air on HBO each week.
