Netflix’s New Thriller Becomes Instant Streaming Success, but Its Ending Is Dividing Everyone

A new political thriller is quickly becoming a hit on Netflix, despite a controversial ending that’s sparked a lot of discussion. It’s the first film in eight years from Academy Award-winning director Kathryn Bigelow, following her 2017 film Detroit. Released on October 24th, the movie immediately climbed into the top 10, joining popular titles like KPop Demon Hunters, The Elixir, and The Woman in Cabin 10. While it’s found instant success, some viewers are frustrated by the unresolved ending.

Everyone is talking about the new movie A House of Dynamite, which has been the most-watched film on Netflix worldwide since October 25th, according to FlixPatrol. The movie, previously shown in a few theaters, portrays the 18 minutes following a nuclear missile launch aimed at the United States. It’s divided into three parts, each focusing on a different group responding to the crisis: the White House Situation Room, Strategic Command, and the President. Currently, the film is No. 1 in countries all over the world, including the United States.

A House of Dynamite’s Ending Is Divisive

Everyone’s talking about A House of Dynamite, and it’s quickly become a streaming favorite! It’s earned the “Certified Fresh” label on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics (79%) and audiences (77%) both loving the suspense and strong performances from stars like Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, and Tracy Letts. The biggest downside? The ending is deeply unsatisfying and doesn’t offer much closure, leaving viewers frustrated.

David Fear from Rolling Stone felt the ending of A House of Dynamite was deliberately unresolved and frustrating, leaving viewers shocked and disappointed despite the film’s strong qualities. David Crow of Den of Geek compared the movie to a carefully prepared explosion that never actually goes off, highlighting a wasted potential despite the skill of its writer and director.

Viewers have expressed similar disappointment with the show’s unsatisfying conclusion. One person tweeted a warning about House of Dynamite on Netflix, saying it “doesn’t have an ending” and was a “waste” of time. Another viewer commented that they’d never seen such a poor ending, saying the show just stops without resolving anything, and the credits suddenly roll.

Although the ending might be unsettling, director Kathryn Bigelow had a purpose in mind. She explained to Netflix’s Tudum that she wanted viewers to leave the theater pondering what comes next, as the film addresses a critical global issue. While she hopes for a future with fewer nuclear weapons, she believes we currently live in a dangerously precarious world.

A House of Dynamite is now streaming on Netflix.
