As a dedicated fan of Techland’s gripping Dying Light series, I found myself taken aback when they recently announced the shelving of two unnamed projects. This decision comes at a challenging time for the company, having reported significant financial losses amounting to millions in 2023 and 2024. The uncertainty surrounding their future titles has left many fans like me feeling apprehensive about the fate of our beloved horror survival franchise.
As per Insider Gaming’s report, the developer disclosed to media outlets through a press release that they had scrapped two of their upcoming games without explicitly naming which ones. However, according to Insider Gaming, one of these projects was codenamed “Project Cornerstone” and would have been an action game set in a fantasy world, reminiscent of Star Wars.
After announcing the cancellation, Techland provided more details to Insider Gaming, explaining their reasons behind the decision and addressing concerns shared by some gamers.
Techland’s statement explained that game development isn’t always a straightforward process, requiring new strategies to create exceptional games. Notably, no layoffs have taken place; instead, developers were reassigned to different projects currently in production. The main priority at the moment is releasing “Dying Light: The Beast” on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Following the release of “Dying Light: The Beast,” they will disclose details about future games when appropriate.
During video game creation, it’s fairly standard for the size or trajectory of projects to shift. However, players are rightfully cautious about such updates due to recent major shifts within the gaming industry. Just last week, Microsoft made a significant cut, terminating approximately 9,000 employees, allegedly impacting Halo Studios and potentially jeopardizing the future of the renowned Halo series.
In January, Sony revealed they were scrapping two games in their live-service lineup, marking the tenth such cancellation over a three-year period. As reported by gaming journalist Jason Schreier, one of these canceled projects was intended to be a live-service God of War game. It appears that even iconic and widely admired franchises like Halo and God of War are not immune to this trend in the current industry landscape.
Players felt let down by Techland’s decision to shelve their unannounced games, leading some to express concerns about the future health of major game studios in AAA gaming. Many gamers believe that these big corporations have reached a critical juncture, struggling to create financially viable games due to the extended development periods for video games and the intricate nature of the gaming industry landscape.
