Hollywood is still heavily focused on sequels, and horror movies are no exception. We’ve seen lots of follow-up films, prequels, and even ‘requels’ like the 2018 version of Halloween and 28 Years Later. This trend doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon, with new installments of franchises like The Exorcist: Deceiver and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 on the way. One particularly controversial horror sequel from 2023 is now available to stream on Netflix.
The new horror movie, The Nun II, is the latest installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise and a direct sequel to The Nun. Directed by Michael Chaves, it will be available to stream on Netflix starting November 1st. Set in France in 1956, the film follows Sister Irene (played by Taissa Farmiga) as she battles the demonic nun Valak once again, this time to protect a convent and its community. Jonas Bloquet and Bonnie Aarons return as Maurice and Sister Debra, and the cast also includes Anna Popplewell and Katelyn Rose.
The Nun II Was a Divisive Entry Into the Conjuring Universe
I was really excited for The Nun II, and it definitely did well at the box office, making over $270 million globally! But honestly, it seemed to split people. Critics and audiences had pretty mixed reactions – a lot of people thought it wasn’t very original, the story was hard to follow, and the characters weren’t that well-developed. It’s sitting at around 51% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, but audiences seem to like it a bit more with a 72% rating. Still, if you just want to be scared, I think you’ll enjoy it!
The Nun II is one of the most frightening films in The Conjuring Universe, doubling down on the gothic and religious horror that defines the series. The movie uses its European setting to create a darker, more immersive atmosphere, making the frequent jump scares even more impactful. While it’s generally a more intense and consistently scary experience, opinions are divided on how well the scares actually work, with some viewers feeling the film relies too much on predictable frights and doesn’t offer much beyond them.
New Movies Coming to Netflix
Netflix is adding a bunch of new movies in November! Starting November 1st, subscribers can stream titles like Back to the Future, Crazy Rich Asians, Doctor Sleep, Don’t Worry Darling, Ocean’s 8, Paddington 2, and The Nun II.
