I’ve noticed some big changes are coming to The Simpsons. After an incredible 25 seasons, the show is entering a new era. They’ve just been renewed for four more seasons on FOX, which means we can expect The Simpsons to run all the way to Season 40! Plus, there’s even talk of a new movie coming out in 2027. It’s a lot for the team, and unfortunately, they’re losing one of the key people who’s been driving the show all this time.
Al Jean, the current showrunner of The Simpsons (a role he’s held since Season 13), announced on social media that the next episode will be his last in that position. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for the show, as a new showrunner will be taking over – though their identity hasn’t been revealed yet. Matt Selman, who has been a co-showrunner for several seasons, is a potential candidate. However, Jean clarified that he won’t be leaving the series entirely.
The Simpsons Showrunner Exits After 25 Seasons
Thanks for tuning in to The Simpsons tonight! Next week will be the last episode I’ll be showrunning—at least for the time being—though I still love working on the show. We’re finishing up with an episode and a half directed by a fantastic new director and a writer who always pushes me to do better.

The latest episode of The Simpsons, Season 37’s Episode 5, titled “Bad Boys…For Life?”, will revisit a previously unseen moment in the family’s history, with Bart, as usual, finding himself in trouble. This episode is special because it’s the last one Jean will be leading as showrunner – though it’s unclear if he’s leaving the show altogether or simply taking on a different role. Regardless, The Simpsons universe is set to grow significantly over the next few years.
With a Simpsons Movie sequel planned for 2027, work on the new film will happen at the same time as the ongoing TV series – just like it did with the first movie 20 years ago. That’s probably why it’s taken so long to make a second film. Al Jean, a long-time writer and showrunner, may take on different roles as the movie progresses, or he might step down to work on other projects. Having been with the show since the beginning, his departure will be a significant change no matter what he does next.
What’s Next for The Simpsons?
Fans of The Simpsons have plenty to be excited about! FOX has renewed the show through Season 40, and a new movie is also being developed. While Season 37 is still early in its run, viewers are already noticing some significant changes, with episodes becoming more creative in exploring the personalities of long-time characters. This suggests the show has plenty of new stories to tell.
With a change in leadership and some behind-the-scenes shifts, The Simpsons is entering a new phase. Just as the show has evolved over the years, the current seasons will be distinct from what came before, especially as the series approaches its landmark 40th season.
