Sony’s throwing all its chips in the anime basket – and it’s paying off big time.
Following the huge success of the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle film earlier this year, the new Chainsaw Man movie is also proving to be very popular.
The anime film Reze Arc is now number one at the US Box Office, surpassing even the new Bruce Springsteen biopic. It earned about $17.25 million in its opening weekend, and has already made over $100 million worldwide.
So, after the Demon Slayer movie absolutely blew up – seriously, it made over $70 million just on its opening weekend in the US, which is a record for anime movies – it’s now earned around $667 million worldwide. It was a huge hit, and I’m not surprised!
Crunchyroll, a company owned by Sony, released both films worldwide, signaling a growing focus on this type of content.
Sony will not be buying Warner Bros., according to CEO Hiroki Totoki. He stated the company’s priority is to invest in anime and video games instead.
He believes anime is only just beginning to gain popularity and expects it to continue growing rapidly for the foreseeable future.
Considering the latest box office results, Sony’s decision appears to be a brilliant success.
