Sony and Tencent Agree to Delay Hearing Over “Light of Motiram” Dispute Until 2026

Sony sued Tencent months ago, claiming their new survival game, Light of Motiram, closely copies key features from the Horizon series. Sony has even described Light of Motiram as a near-identical copy.

Since then, both sides have been trading legal blows back and forth.

So, I heard back in September that Tencent is trying to get Sony’s lawsuit thrown out. Apparently, Tencent thinks Sony is basically trying to control everything about how games in this genre have to be made – like they want a monopoly on the standard ideas and features. It’s a pretty bold claim!

Sony responded to Tencent’s request by asking the court to block the release of Light of Motiram. Sony argues that allowing the game to launch would cause lasting and significant damage to the Horizon series.

Tencent recently argued in legal filings that Sony’s lawsuit is based on assumptions about a game that hasn’t even been released and should therefore be dropped. Surprisingly, Tencent also referenced several trademarks featuring Mickey Mouse as part of its defense.

Both sides have decided to postpone the court hearing regarding Light of Motiram until 2026.

An Unexpected Line of Defense from Tencent

While Sony claims Tencent is copying their work, Tencent is defending itself by highlighting numerous trademarks related to Mickey Mouse.

Using Mickey Mouse trademarks as a defense in a case involving robots like those from Horizon Zero Dawn might seem strange. However, established legal precedent is very important in trademark and intellectual property law.

Tencent is questioning Sony’s attempt to trademark a general visual style, arguing that Sony’s claims are likely too broad. They point to the numerous examples of Mickey Mouse imagery being used over the years without harming competition, suggesting that Disney’s iconic character proves a visual style can be widely used without giving one company exclusive rights.

Tencent highlighted the complexities of copyright and trademark law in video games, particularly when games share similar ideas, genres, or themes. They questioned how much protection should be granted in these cases, especially considering common inspirations and tropes.

Putting that issue to one side, postponing the court hearing until 2026 gives both sides more time to prepare.

The postponement benefits both companies. Sony gets more time to build its case, potentially finding more proof that Tencent copied its work and misled customers. For Tencent, the delay offers an opportunity to refine its game and marketing, possibly reducing its legal risks before a full trial.

Tencent appears to have already updated its Steam page and promotional content for Light of Motiram. Notably, they’ve taken down previous screenshots and descriptions that reminded people of the game Horizon.

This indicates Tencent is anticipating potential problems and taking steps to minimize any financial losses or delays in launching the game.
