Vertigo Games announced that their virtual reality game, a spin-off of the Thief series for PlayStation VR2, will launch on December 4th, 2025. It will also be available on other VR headsets like Meta Quest and Steam VR. The game, called Thief: Legacy of Shadow, is being developed by Maze Theory in partnership with the original creators at Eidos Montreal, and a new gameplay trailer is now available.
You can now pre-order the game on the PlayStation Store, and if you do, you’ll get 10% off the price when it officially releases.

Legacy of Shadow is designed like an immersive sim game – meaning players have freedom to explore open levels and tackle challenges in any order – even though it’s built for virtual reality. According to creative director Steven Gallagher, this combination makes the game especially captivating and realistic. He shared this insight on the PlayStation Blog.
He explained that the experience of naturally looking around while picking locks with the help of realistic hand sensations feels incredibly immersive, like truly being in the game world. The game will also feature advanced sound design and improved visuals in dark areas, thanks to the PSVR2’s OLED technology.
Eidos Montreal briefly explored creating a VR version of Thief for the original PlayStation VR while finishing the 2014 PS4 game. According to Patrice Gallagher, they lacked the necessary VR development experience at the time, making the prototype difficult to play. He’s excited that Thief is now getting a proper VR release.
