Tony Gilroy, renowned for his successful creation of the critically acclaimed Disney+ series “Star Wars: Andor“, has shared his insights on various aspects of the galaxy, expressing admiration for one of the franchise’s less-watched recent releases. In the latest edition of Empire Magazine, Gilroy discussed his opinions on “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew“, the Amblin-style adventure series that saw record-low viewership for a live-action “Star Wars” show. The producer’s comments extend beyond the new series, delving into his unexpected detachment from his work on “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“, and offering a teasing response to the creative direction of “Dawn of the Jedi”, an upcoming film set in the franchise’s ancient past.
Gilroy shared his thoughts on “Skeleton Crew”, stating that he found it extremely engaging and well-executed, despite its relatively low viewership compared to other Star Wars series premieres. Contrary to its underwhelming performance numbers, critics and some fans have appreciated the show’s distinctive atmosphere. However, it has not managed to draw in a broad audience like other franchise installments.
Gilroy mentioned that he plans to watch ‘Rogue One’ this weekend and get a feel for it without any specific expectations, since it was the film that started his journey with ‘Star Wars’. Interestingly, even though he hasn’t revisited the movie yet, everyone else has. This is quite ironic given the recent resurgence in popularity of ‘Rogue One’, which can be attributed to the success of ‘Andor’. In fact, during the week of ‘Andor’s season two finale, viewership for the show peaked at 931 million minutes, making it the most-watched streaming show across all platforms. This surge in interest has also boosted the popularity of ‘Rogue One’, the movie Gilroy co-wrote, causing it to climb to the top of the Disney+ movie charts as viewers flock to continue Cassian’s story.
Tony Gilroy Comments on Dawn of the Jedi
Gilroy, speaking about the future of the Star Wars franchise, praised James Mangold’s upcoming film, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, which will feature co-writer Beau Willimon. He described it as a bold move, stating, “They’re going way back… It’s almost like a blank slate, because it’s uncharted.” This movie is unique as it delves into the earliest history of the Jedi Order, taking place around 25,000 years before any other Star Wars film. Gilroy’s comment about it being “free” highlights its creative allure, as this story takes place in a narrative realm disconnected from the intricate lore of the Skywalker Saga and its associated battles, providing an exceptional degree of freedom in storytelling that has grown scarce within the franchise.
Willimon played a significant role in crafting some of the most acclaimed storylines within “Andor”, such as the Narkina 5 prison arc. This implies that “Dawn of the Jedi” aspires to be an epic centered around characters. The venture signifies a possible transformation for Lucasfilm, offering an opportunity to establish a fresh mythology from scratch, similar to the daring, original world-building that made “Andor” a hit.
On Disney+, you can stream “Star Wars: Andor,” “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Unfortunately, we don’t yet know when “Dawn of the Jedi” will be released.
