Matt Cameron, the drummer for Pearl Jam, has revealed that he’s stepping away from the drums and the band after a remarkable 27-year tenure.
On July 7th, Cameron (age 62) and his team officially announced the news through simultaneous posts on their social media platforms, which were published on the same day.
The band expressed gratitude towards their fans for their backing, acknowledging the positive experience they shared with Cameron during his tenure, without fully disclosing the reasons behind their decision.
Cameron’s message said: “After an amazing 27-year journey, I am now stepping off the drum stage for Pearl Jam for the last time.
I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Jeff Ament, Ed Vedder, Mike McCready, and Stone Gossard for welcoming me into your band back in 1998, an experience that offered me a once-in-a-lifetime chance teeming with friendships, artistic growth, trials, and joy.
I will always be deeply appreciative towards the team, employees, and fans everywhere. This has been a truly remarkable experience, with even more to come. Stay tuned. From the depths of my heart, I express my gratitude to each and every one of you.

Accompanying the message, the band’s joint statement stated: “Matt Cameron, who was one of our earliest musical heroes in Skinyard and Soundgarden, and played on our first demos in 1990, has always been an exceptional and genuine force as a musician and drummer.
For the past 27 years, he has driven our band’s live performances and studio recordings during concerts and in the recording studio. This period has been a significant one for us, and we send him our best wishes forevermore.
“He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt.”
Pearl Jam emerged in 1990 amidst the Seattle grunge movement, a period characterized by the birth of bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Mudhoney, and Alice in Chains.
During that period, Soundgarden was where Cameron served as the drummer, contributing significantly to their prominence within the grunge genre that experienced considerable commercial fame.
Cameron performed with Soundgarden from 1986 to 1997, and joined Pearl Jam a year later.
Initially brought in as a short-term substitute for the band, he eventually solidified his position and remained with them longer than any other drummer.

In 2010, he reunited with Soundgarden, performing and traveling globally with them until 2017, when the band disbanded permanently following the demise of their lead singer, Chris Cornell.
I’m proud to say that I’ve been part of the wave that made Soundgarden and Pearl Jam household names in rock music. It’s an honor to know that our contributions have been recognized by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Soundgarden will be initiated into the collection in November this year.
