Jason Isaacs has spoken out against what he perceives as racially biased comments regarding Paapa Essiedu’s casting as Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter production.
The actor from The White Lotus, known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the initial movie franchise, applauded Essiedu, star of The Lazarus Project, as he readies himself to emulate the performance of Alan Rickman, who portrayed Snape on screen. (This version maintains the original’s structure while using simpler, more conversational language.)
At FanExpo Denver, as reported by Collider, Isaacs stated that “Paapa Essiedu is one of the most exceptional actors I’ve encountered in my lifetime. However, I’ve noticed some individuals online being disrespectful towards him. Their behavior, unfortunately, appears to be rooted in racism.
Every actor in the latest Harry Potter TV show is fantastic. It’s likely that they’ll be astounded, or perhaps more accurately, speechless – using a figurative sense of ‘speechless’ – when they witness Essiedu’s performance on set.
Isaac mentioned that he didn’t receive any early details about casting, further explaining: “It’s quite amusing, my daughter’s college friend works in the show’s casting department. She visited for dinner, but she wouldn’t spill a thing! Incredible, such a waste of her university education fees.

Essiedu will be accompanied by stars like Nick Frost, who plays Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, John Lithgow in the role of Albus Dumbledore, and others in the HBO adaptation of JK Rowling’s novels.
In the early part of this year, Essiedu joined numerous movie and television industry personnel in expressing their backing for transgender rights, after the UK Supreme Court established that a woman’s legal identity is rooted in biology, following their ruling.
As a devoted fan of Harry Potter, I’ve found myself caught in the midst of a storm of opinions regarding JK Rowling’s views on transgender rights. In the year 2020, she penned an extensive piece expressing her thoughts on debates surrounding sex and gender, which has since been met with criticism and disagreement from organizations like Stonewall that support the LGBTQ+ community.

J.K. Rowling expressed her opinions publicly as well, such as in a 2024 post on X (previously known as Twitter), where she firmly stated that “there are no children who identify as trans.” She also voiced her disagreement with the notion that a child might be born into a body that doesn’t align with their true identity.
By May 2025, JK Rowling established the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, a resource dedicated to providing legal aid for individuals and organizations who are advocating for the preservation of women’s rights based on their biological sex.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed an interesting development within the Harry Potter community: The talented cast members like Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson have expressed their support for transgender rights, distancing themselves from J.K. Rowling’s recent views that have sparked controversy. On the other hand, actors such as Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent have come forward in defense of Rowling, standing by her amidst criticism she has faced.
Essiedu hasn’t openly commented on Rowling’s opinions yet, while other cast members of the new TV show have. As Frost shared with The Observer, “She has her viewpoint and I have mine, and they simply don’t overlap at all.
The series is expected to start filming this year and is currently scheduled for release in 2027.
