The latest episode of One Piece reveals a significant challenge as the series, created by Eiichiro Oda, moves closer to its conclusion. It’s a problem even Luffy can’t solve alone, given the current circumstances. The anime is rapidly progressing through the final parts of the Egghead Arc, and will soon move from weekly episodes to a seasonal release schedule starting next year. This makes every new development in the story particularly important as the series builds towards its epic finale.
The latest episode of One Piece features Dr. Vegapunk sharing important discoveries about the past – discoveries that have made him a target of the World Government. However, the most shocking revelation is the fate of the One Piece world itself. Vegapunk explains that the world is gradually sinking, and a recent major earthquake has drastically sped up the process. This is a problem Luffy can’t solve with a quick fix.
One Piece Reveals Its World Is Sinking
In One Piece Episode 1148, Dr. Vegapunk reveals a troubling message: the world is slowly sinking. Recent earthquakes have caused sea levels to rise, submerging some areas by over a meter. Vegapunk believes this is connected to events from a forgotten period of history called the Void Century. However, the World Government has erased most records of this time and is determined to keep those secrets hidden.
The story explains why the government considers Vegapunk a threat and why the highest authorities have come to the island to stop his knowledge from spreading. With the revelation that the world is slowly sinking, it’s going to cause widespread panic as people desperately search for a way to survive. However, the problem is so massive that typical solutions won’t be enough.
What Is Luffy Supposed to Do About This?

This brings up a larger question about the ending of One Piece. If Luffy simply wants to find the treasure and become King of the Pirates, what will he do afterward? His true motivations remain a mystery, and could be connected to the evolving world within the story. Even if his goal is to save the world, he currently lacks the power to do so on his own.
It’s difficult to fully understand how Luffy’s adventures fit into the larger world, as his journey often feels self-contained. However, fans can expect to learn more about the overarching history as he travels to new places. With the anime finally showing the Giants’ homeland of Elbaph next April, there’s a lot to anticipate as the story moves closer to its climax.
