Action movies remain incredibly popular, as seen with recent hits like The Gray Man, Extraction, and The Beekeeper, which have attracted large audiences in theaters and on streaming platforms. We’ve also seen successful revivals of classic action franchises, such as Twisters and Top Gun: Maverick. These films proved that older action properties can still resonate with today’s viewers, and even surpass the success of their original 80s and 90s counterparts. The upcoming reboot of Cliffhanger – more of a fresh take than a direct sequel – hopes to follow that same path next year.
As a big movie fan, I have a feeling that if Cliffhanger does well, it could start something new. I’m talking about a wave of updated versions of those classic – or maybe not-so-classic, but still beloved – Sylvester Stallone films. It feels like a smart move, and I’m here for it!
Why Cliffhanger & Other Modern Stallone Movie Reboots Are an Exciting Prospect

This upcoming project is definitely something to look forward to. Director Jaume Collet-Serra, known for reliably good films like Orphan, Non-Stop, Run All Night, The Shallows, and Jungle Cruise, is at the helm. Plus, his recent streaming success, Carry-On, proves he still excels at creating thrilling action movies.
I’m really surprised by the direction the new Cliffhanger is taking! For years, everyone thought they’d make a sequel with Sylvester Stallone reprising his role as Gabe Walker. But now it looks like Lily James will be the lead, playing a new character named Naomi. She’s also a mountaineer, but instead of facing robbers like in the original, she’s up against a group of kidnappers. It’s a completely different take than I anticipated!
This changes how we look at the story, especially since it didn’t really need Sylvester Stallone in the first place. It makes you wonder if there are other films of his that could be updated and reimagined for today’s audiences.
While Sylvester Stallone has revisited characters in series like Rocky with Creed and attempted a supporting role in The Expendables, he’s most strongly identified with Rambo. Other franchises he’s been a part of could potentially be successfully revived with some updates, but Rambo feels uniquely connected to him.
A show like Cobra could be successful, but perhaps with a less intense focus on gun use. The idea of a police officer battling a group of serial killers is a strong premise that could work well again.
The action-comedy Tango & Cash, where the cop duo are falsely accused of a crime, could also be successfully remade. While it’s unlikely his comedies like Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot or Rhinestone would be rebooted, Oscar has potential. A modern take on that screwball mob comedy, with the right lead actor – perhaps someone like Boyd Holbrook or Channing Tatum – could be even more successful now than it was in 1991, potentially surpassing Stallone’s original performance.
Besides Rambo and The Expendables, several other Sylvester Stallone films could be revisited in the 2020s, such as The Specialist, Assassins, Get Carter, and Cop Land. However, the success of the new Cliffhanger movie will likely determine if these projects move forward.
