PS2 Set to Remain King of Consoles as Nintendo Switch Sales Start to Stall

It used to seem certain that the Nintendo Switch would eventually sell more units than the PlayStation 2, but now that outcome isn’t as guaranteed.

The Nintendo Switch hasn’t sold 1 million units in a quarter for the first time, indicating that its popularity may be declining.

It was expected that Switch sales would eventually fall as Nintendo focuses on the Switch 2. However, this slowdown now makes it unlikely the Switch will surpass the PlayStation 2, which currently holds the record for the best-selling console ever.

Nintendo reports that the Switch has sold 154 million units. The PlayStation 2, however, remains the best-selling console with 160 million units sold.

Sony confirmed this figure back in November of last year, right around the time the Nintendo Switch was nearing 150 million units sold.

Reaching 160 million sales is still within reach for the Switch. It’s expected to sell well during the holidays, and could get a boost from things like price reductions in the future.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult for the Switch to maintain its sales momentum. Asking it to sell another 6 million units is a lot, considering it’s nearly eight years old and people are already buying its newer replacement.

Will the PlayStation 2’s sales numbers ever level off? It seems unlikely Sony will suddenly find another 5 million consoles to sell. Share your thoughts in the comments below!
