A new Doctor Who series is bringing back a powerful family line that hasn’t been seen in 60 years, originally featured in the classic story “The Daleks’ Master Plan.” The Daleks, the Doctor’s deadliest foes, have caused immense destruction throughout time and space – they even destroyed the Time Lords’ home planet, Gallifrey, nearly wiping out the entire race.
The popular villains, the Daleks, are back in the latest audio drama, Bernice Summerfield: The Dalek Eternity 3, starring Lisa Bowerman and Nicholas Briggs. This time, they’ve teamed up with Sidney Chen, the nephew of a powerful enemy from a classic Doctor Who story. It appears the Daleks have a new scheme in motion, and it’s up to time-traveler Bernice Summerfield to stop them and their new ally.

The Chen Bloodline Has A Dark History

Mavic Chen, portrayed by Kevin Stoney in the classic Doctor Who story “The Daleks’ Master Plan,” became the Guardian of the Solar System around the 41st century. He was a cold and cunning leader who teamed up with the Daleks, but planned to double-cross them. His goal was to steal the Time Destructor – a very powerful weapon – and use it to take control. Chen collaborated with the Daleks in their pursuit of the First Doctor (played by William Hartnell) across time and space.
Mavic Chen died in “The Daleks’ Master Plan,” just like anyone else who makes a deal with the Daleks. Once he was no longer useful, he was destroyed, and reportedly died shocked and horrified to realize what was happening. He’s become known as the greatest traitor in human history, a reputation that continues even in the recent Big Finish audio dramas.
Big Finish Is Once Again Adding More Depth To Doctor Who’s Legacy

Big Finish is revisiting the story of the Chen family, a lineage marked by betrayal. Sidney Chen seems to be following the same path as his uncle, but it’s unclear if he’s another enemy of humanity or if he’s secretly trying to use the Daleks to make amends for his family’s past. This story dives deep into Doctor Who lore – something Big Finish audio dramas do exceptionally well – and it will be compelling to see the lasting impact of Mavic Chen’s actions on his relatives.
It’s always fun to see a former Doctor Who companion, especially someone as capable as Bernice Summerfield, face the Daleks on her own. The Daleks are famously one of the most terrifying and destructive forces in the universe – even past Doctors considered drastic measures against them. Because Dalek stories are typically grand and epic, The Dalek Eternity 3 promises to be a story you won’t want to miss.
Bernice Summerfield: The Dalek Eternity 3 is on sale now from Big Finish.
