Toy Story 5 Reveals Woody’s Updated Look and New Toys in Pixar’s Sequel

Pixar is revisiting the beloved world of Woody and his friends with a new installment, Toy Story 5, coming next summer. This time, the toys face a new challenge: competing for Bonnie’s affection with modern electronic gadgets, like a frog-shaped tablet called Lilypad. While a full trailer hasn’t been released yet, Pixar shared some initial concept art over the summer, and now they’ve revealed even more images, including a redesigned look for Woody himself.

Pictures of potential merchandise for Toy Story 5 recently appeared online, shared by the X account Cosmic Media and Reddit user steamboatwillie1241. One of the most noticeable changes is that Woody is now wearing a red poncho – a significant departure from his usual look. The leaked images also offer a first glimpse of new characters like Smarty Pants, voiced by Conan O’Brien, as well as a hippo reportedly named Atlas and a camera called Snappy. You can see the photos below.

Toy Story 5 Begins a New Chapter for Woody

It’s common for characters in long-running movie series to get new looks to show how they’ve grown or changed. So, it’s no surprise Pixar has updated Woody’s appearance for Toy Story 5. After being Andy’s favorite, Woody struggled to adjust to life with Bonnie, but found a new role when he reconnected with Bo Peep. Now embracing life as a ‘lost toy,’ Woody works with Bo to help other toys find loving homes. While the reason for his new poncho isn’t yet known, it’s a striking change for the character and reflects his new path. It will be fun to see how Woody reconnects with his old friends and how he’s doing as a ‘lost toy’.

While Woody and Buzz Lightyear are well-known from the Toy Story movies, Jessie will be the central character in the next film. Now wearing Woody’s sheriff badge, she’ll take the lead in helping her friends navigate a new challenge. This change of perspective is a good thing – Woody and Buzz carried the first four films, so giving Jessie a starring role will help Toy Story 5 feel new and exciting. The movie will explore Jessie’s character more deeply than previous installments, building on the memorable moments she’s already had as a supporting character. New merchandise highlights her leadership role, hinting at a strong and interesting storyline.

As a huge Toy Story fan, I’ve been pouring over the merchandise photos, and it looks like Smarty Pants, Atlas, and Snappy are going to be really important in this new story with Lilypad. We know Bonnie’s grown out of her old toys, but beyond that, it’s a mystery how these new characters fit in. Toy Story has always done a great job with its villains – even guys like Stinky Pete and Lotso had understandable reasons for doing what they did. But what really excites me about Toy Story 5 is the idea of different groups of toys just… coexisting in the same space. It’s not necessarily about good versus evil, which is a fresh take. Lilypad and her crew might not be bad toys, just designed for a different kind of play – they’re there to entertain Bonnie in their own way, and that dynamic seems ripe for some amazing storytelling.

Fans are eagerly waiting for Disney to officially reveal something about Toy Story 5. While the recent merchandise photos are exciting, they’ve only increased curiosity about the movie’s story. A short teaser trailer would be really helpful – it could introduce the main idea and conflict, and let viewers get a first look at the new characters and even explain why Woody looks different. With Zootopia 2 coming soon, that would be a great time to release a Toy Story 5 trailer – the first trailer for Toy Story 4 came out around the same time in 2018. This would build excitement for what’s expected to be one of the biggest movies next summer.
