Darkseid VS Thanos – Who is the Greater Villain and Would Win in a Fight?

As a huge comic book and movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the ultimate villains. In the DC and Marvel worlds, you don’t get much bigger than Darkseid and Thanos. They’re both these incredibly powerful, ruthless characters who basically want to take over everything. Darkseid debuted way back in 1971 and has always been about total domination. Marvel, seeing how popular Darkseid was, created Thanos in 1973 as their own universe-level threat. Both have done some truly epic villainous things in their respective universes. But if these two titans ever went head-to-head, who would actually win? Who would be the ultimate supervillain?

Darkseid and Thanos have very different backgrounds and abilities. Darkseid is a New God, one of a race of incredibly powerful beings, and embodies pure evil. His power comes from the Omega Effect, a limitless source of destruction. Thanos, on the other hand, is originally from the planet Titan and is an Eternal – a superpowered human – but he was born looking like the Deviants, their monstrous cousins. Driven by his obsession with Lady Death, Thanos wants to eliminate half of all life in the universe to impress her. To achieve this, he collects incredibly powerful items, most famously the Infinity Gauntlet, which essentially makes him all-powerful.

Thanos’s Infinity Gauntlet Would Give Him the Initial Advantage Against Darkseid

As a huge film fan, I’ve always been fascinated by truly powerful villains, and Darkseid and Thanos definitely fit the bill. They’re both incredibly destructive – we’re talking about beings who can take down gods, wipe out entire superhero teams, and even destroy planets! They can fundamentally alter reality itself. Thinking about a showdown between them is mind-blowing, and it would be an epic battle of cosmic scale. However, if Thanos has the Infinity Gauntlet, I think he’d actually have the upper hand against Darkseid in his standard form. The Gauntlet just gives him too much power.

Darkseid is a terrifying and incredibly powerful villain in the DC Universe. He consistently defeats Superman, has even killed a god like Zeus, and once battled his equal, Highfather, for an entire week. He’s unbelievably durable, shrugging off attacks from even powerful beings like Green Lantern Alan Scott, who was drawing energy from the entire multiverse. Darkseid is famous for his Omega Beams – devastating heat blasts that can change direction to hunt down and destroy anything in their path. Beyond that, he can control minds, move objects with his thoughts, sense cosmic events, teleport across dimensions, change his size, create inescapable traps, and much more. Despite all this, even in his standard form, Darkseid can be overcome by the power of Thanos.

Thanos is already incredibly strong, but the Infinity Gauntlet makes him nearly unstoppable by letting him control the very fabric of the universe. It focuses the power of six Infinity Stones, giving him control over life, thoughts, energy, space, time, and reality itself. With it, he’s defeated powerful beings like gods and even abstract entities such as Galactus and Eternity. He famously used the Gauntlet to wipe out half of all life with a single snap – a power that even a standard version of Darkseid couldn’t withstand. However, even if Thanos were to defeat Darkseid in his normal form, he’d still have to face the true, ultimate power of the Lord of Apokolips.

True Darkseid is Far Beyond Thanos’ Power

Darkseid isn’t just a powerful ruler; the Darkseid we usually see is only a small part of his true self. The real Darkseid is a New God – the very embodiment of evil – and exists on a higher plane of reality. He creates weaker versions of himself to interact with the universe, as his full power would unintentionally destroy everything. While Thanos could defeat one of these lesser forms, he wouldn’t stand a chance against the true Darkseid, whose power is on an entirely different scale.

Okay, so as a huge movie fan, I’ve thought a lot about this. Everyone talks about Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet being all-powerful, and he is incredibly strong – able to wipe out half of everything. But here’s the thing: that power is mostly limited to his own universe. If he jumped to another one, the Stones would be useless, and he’d just be a really tough guy who can maybe destroy planets. Even the gods he’s beaten are powerful, but still operate within those universal limits. Now, when we talk about true Darkseid – the real deal – we’re talking about something else entirely. He exists outside of all universes, beyond time and space. Thanos wouldn’t even be able to scratch him. Darkseid could just blink Thanos away to another dimension or universe, leaving him powerless. And unlike Thanos, Darkseid’s Omega Beams aren’t restricted by any boundaries – he can use them anywhere, without limits. It’s a totally different scale of power, honestly.

Darkseid’s accomplishments in comic books far surpass anything Thanos has ever achieved. For example, during Infinite Frontier, Darkseid instantly killed the Quintessence – a group comprised of the most powerful beings in the DC Multiverse. Even with the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos struggled against powerful cosmic entities like Eternity and a coalition of gods. Perhaps Darkseid’s most terrifying act occurred while dying in Final Crisis. Realizing he couldn’t conquer the multiverse, he chose to destroy it instead, allowing himself to fall from his realm onto everything that exists. Even his shadow caused chaos, and a direct impact would have erased all of time and space.

Winner: Darkseid

Thanos is incredibly powerful, arguably one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains, and could likely go toe-to-toe with even Darkseid’s avatar. However, once Darkseid fully manifests his power, not even the Infinity Gauntlet could save Thanos. While Thanos poses a threat to universes and sometimes even multiple universes, he’s still bound by the rules of his reality. Darkseid, on the other hand, is a god existing beyond human understanding, with limitless destructive capabilities. Because of these limitations, Darkseid would see Thanos as little more than an annoyance. Thanos might be unavoidable, but Darkseid is an absolute, fundamental force.
