One of the best parts of watching TV is guessing what will happen next. No matter the genre – mystery, comedy, or drama – shows often use incomplete information and unresolved storylines to keep us engaged, making us want to see how everything comes together.
Plot twists can sometimes be obvious and fall flat, but usually stories take unexpected turns. The most effective twists are surprising and impactful, yet still feel like a natural part of the story.
7) Eleanor is not in The Good Place (The Good Place)

The TV show The Good Place started with a clever idea: a woman who wasn’t actually a good person found herself in Heaven and had to learn how to behave. Or so everyone thought! The first season ended with a big twist: Eleanor wasn’t in Heaven at all, but in a cleverly disguised version of the Bad Place, designed to punish a group of sinners forever.
I absolutely loved how The Good Place flipped the script on us! It always felt a little off that someone like Eleanor was in the Good Place, and honestly, a lot of the others didn’t exactly seem deserving either. But then they threw Chidi into the mix, and he seemed like the most perfect fit – a total goody-two-shoes! It was such a clever way to keep us guessing.
6) Nicky Is Alive (This Is Us)

The TV show This Is Us frequently used flashbacks and flash-forwards to keep viewers guessing and build suspense before revealing important plot points. One of the show’s most surprising and debated twists was the discovery that Jack’s brother, Nicky, had actually been alive all along.
The show heavily implied Jack had never recovered from what he believed was Nicky’s death in Vietnam. So, learning Nicky was actually alive, but had been distant from Jack, was incredibly upsetting for viewers – it felt like it diminished the genuine pain Jack had carried for so long and challenged everything we understood about his character.
5) Laura Palmer Was Killed By Her Possessed Father (Twin Peaks)

Twin Peaks was groundbreaking for its storytelling, frequently employing dreamlike imagery, hidden meanings, and strange events to blend realistic dramas with the supernatural. Initially, though, the show presented itself as a simple murder mystery in a quiet town.
When it was revealed that Laura’s father, Leland, had killed her while under the influence of the evil spirit BOB, most viewers had already suspected Leland, but no one anticipated a supernatural explanation. This reveal was so impactful because it confirmed suspicions while simultaneously subverting expectations, delivering a shocking twist that was both familiar and completely unexpected.
4) Dead Characters Were Really Held Prisoner In a Parallel Version of New Salem (Days of Our Lives)

While Days of Our Lives often features supernatural storylines – like possessions and characters coming back to life – it wasn’t always this way. One of the show’s earliest shocking twists happened in 2004, when several beloved characters were killed by a serial killer known as the Salem Stalker.
The deaths of these characters initially upset many loyal viewers, but it was soon revealed they hadn’t died – they were actually being held captive on an island named Melaswen, which is New Salem spelled backward. Even more surprisingly, Marlena Evans had placed them there after being brainwashed by André Dimera into believing she was harming her loved ones. This unexpected turn of events revitalized the soap opera and provided a way to bring back popular characters fans wanted to see again.
3) Ben is Dead (Scrubs)
I always admired how Scrubs wasn’t afraid to take risks. One episode, in particular, really stands out – they did a take on The Sixth Sense! It aired during the third season and honestly, it’s one of the most moving episodes they ever made. I know that kind of twist can only really work once, because the surprise of a character being dead the whole time is what makes it so powerful, but it was such a clever and unexpected way to tell a story.
I remember when JD diagnosed Ben with leukemia a while back – he was a friend of Dr. Cox’s. This episode really focused on Dr. Cox trying to convince Ben to get treatment, which made it so shocking to find out at the end that he was actually at Ben’s funeral. It turns out Ben had passed away before we even saw him in the episode! Looking back, it all makes sense – Ben only really talked to Dr. Cox the whole time, but it was a detail so easy to miss when you first watch it. It was a really powerful, but subtle, twist.
2) Madeline Matlock is Really Madeline Kingston (Matlock)

The surprising ending to the first episode of the new Kathy Bates Matlock series became so popular that most people likely found out what happened even if they didn’t watch it right away. While the show was advertised as a revival of the original Andy Griffith Matlock series, that wasn’t quite the whole story.
The first episode centers on Madeline, a 75-year-old woman who returns to her career as a lawyer and persuades Jacobson Moore to give her a job. The episode ends with a surprising reveal: Madeline returns home to her husband, who everyone believed was deceased. We then learn she’s using the name “Matlock” as a tribute to her favorite legal drama character and has deliberately sought out Jacobson Moore to investigate whether the firm played a role in her daughter’s death by opioid overdose twelve years prior.
While Matlock often surprised viewers with its episode endings, this one was particularly shocking. It dramatically shifted the show’s focus, revealing a deeper, more emotional story about a mother seeking justice for her daughter, and fundamentally changing what audiences believed the series was about.
1) River Song is Amy and Rory’s Daughter (Doctor Who)

River Song was a particularly mysterious character in Doctor Who. Her story resembled that of The Time Traveler’s Wife; she and the Doctor shared a deep connection, but due to the complexities of time, he didn’t recognize her.
Throughout River’s storyline, it became obvious that she and the Doctor shared a romantic connection – a love that existed in her past and would unfold in his future. Most viewers didn’t realize she was the daughter of the Doctor’s previous companions, especially because she initially appeared as an adversary pretending to be an ally. The reveal of her true identity was also a clever wordplay, as ‘River Song’ was a pseudonym for her birth name, Melanie Pond.
