For over ten years, fans have been waiting for the X-Men to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it looks like that time is almost here. With major Avengers films like Doomsday and Secret Wars on the horizon, details about the X-Men’s introduction are starting to emerge. A recent rumor suggests which characters will lead the charge, and surprisingly, Wolverine doesn’t appear to be among them.
In the latest episode of The Kristian Harloff Show, Harloff discussed rumors surrounding upcoming Marvel movies like Doomsday and Secret Wars, as well as how the X-Men might be integrated into the MCU. One rumor stood out: apparently, Wolverine won’t be the central X-Men character. Instead, the focus will be on Cyclops and the entire Summers family.
Harloff explained that with the X-Men taking center stage, Cyclops and his family will be a major focus. Because of this, Wolverine won’t be as prominent a character.
Okay, let’s talk about this potential shift in the X-Men world. Honestly, it feels like a massive, but really exciting, departure from what we got at 20th Century Fox. For years, Wolverine – and let’s be real, Hugh Jackman’s incredible performance – was that universe. Everything revolved around him. Fox built so many films around Logan, even big, universe-altering events like Days of Future Past. It always came back to him leading the charge, which, while great, definitely limited the scope of things. This change could finally open up the possibilities for other mutants to truly shine.
Giving Cyclops a more prominent role would align the stories with many different periods of the comics, particularly if the rumors about a focus on the Summers family are true. The Summers family – including Cyclops, Jean Grey, Cable, Rachel Summers, Havoc, Vulcan, and Corsair – has a rich history and complex relationships that could form the core of the franchise. This family also connects to many other important characters and events, providing a solid base for future stories.
Wolverine isn’t going anywhere, and he’s expected to be just as popular in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as he was in the previous Fox films. While Hugh Jackman likely won’t be the one playing Wolverine regularly, there’s a chance he could return for a final appearance in Avengers: Doomsday with other familiar X-Men actors. Only time will tell what happens.
Jake Schreier is set to direct the next X-Men movie, which will introduce both the X-Men and the broader world of mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s a big undertaking, but Schreier appears well-equipped for the job, and the upcoming Secret Wars event will provide a fresh starting point for the story.
Regarding Secret Wars, Harloff shared another intriguing possibility: that Doomsday will involve the collision of three different Earths, creating Battleworld. Battleworld has always been intended as a combination of multiple universes, and the film will likely result in a single, refined universe that sets the direction for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If this rumor is accurate, fans can expect to see a lot more stories featuring the Summers family in upcoming films.
