Many fans agree that one of the biggest changes made in the Harry Potter movies actually improved upon the original book. While the Warner Bros. films took liberties with the story – some necessary, others questionable – it’s easy to look back and wish certain plotlines hadn’t been cut or scenes toned down (the burning of the Burrow, for example, felt unnecessary). But nothing sparks more debate than the way Harry handled the Elder Wand in the final film, Deathly Hallows Part 2.
In the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry defeated Voldemort by becoming the true owner of the Elder Wand. This was a major plot twist, as the wand hadn’t truly belonged to Voldemort or even Snape. Surprisingly, Draco Malfoy had unknowingly possessed it before Harry disarmed him and took control. This made for a satisfying conclusion. However, many Harry Potter fans were upset when Harry broke the Elder Wand at the end of the film series.
Honestly, I was shocked when Harry just broke the Elder Wand! Everyone thought it was this ultimate, unbeatable thing, so destroying it seemed a little… anticlimactic, especially after all that build-up in the books. It felt like it dismissed a lot of established wand history. But you know what? Looking back, it actually makes Harry’s plan better. It’s a surprisingly clever move when you think about it, and a really definitive way for him to end things.
Harry’s Elder Wand Plan Was Even More Ridiculous In The Harry Potter Books
In the Harry Potter series, Harry realized the Elder Wand was too risky to keep. It would make him a target, so he decided to return it to Dumbledore’s grave, hoping its power would fade when he eventually died. He felt this solved the problem.
The biggest problem is that hiding the Elder Wand didn’t guarantee it would stay out of Voldemort’s reach. It had been stolen once before, so it could easily be stolen again. Harry hoped people didn’t know about the wand, but his long explanation during the duel revealed its secrets to many of the fighters, including how its allegiance changed hands.
The world of Harry Potter also shows us that you don’t need to physically hold the Elder Wand to gain its power. Because Harry became an Auror, fighting Dark Wizards put him at constant risk – his opponents could unknowingly claim ownership of the wand just by battling him. This was a significant danger.
HBO’s Harry Potter TV Show Needs A Better Solution For The Elder Wand
Look, I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, and generally I don’t love it when they change things from the books. But the whole story around the Elder Wand has always been confusing, and honestly, both the books and the movies kind of dropped the ball on it. I’m really hoping the new TV show will finally get it right and give the Elder Wand – or the Death Stick, if you prefer – the proper explanation it deserves. It feels like this is our last chance to really nail that part of the story!
It’s challenging to imagine how a new Harry Potter series could handle the Elder Wand, given it’s supposed to be unbreakable. However, the remake could introduce a new rule regarding the Deathly Hallows. Perhaps as the “Master of Death,” Harry will have to make a magical decision about whether or not to disable these powerful items. Because Harry accepted death so readily, his claiming of the Hallows could finally break the Elder Wand’s dangerous power, ending a long-standing curse on the wizarding world. Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see how it plays out.
