The latest season of Ghosts took its unique rules about ghosts even further, featuring a 3,000-year-old Egyptian spirit in a special Halloween episode. The CBS comedy, which centers around Sam Arondekar (Rose McIver) being able to see ghosts because of a brain injury, always enjoys a spooky Halloween installment. Traditionally, Sam and the ghosts of Woodstone hold a seance on Halloween, attempting to contact spirits from the past.
In Season 5, Episode 3 of Ghosts, Sam and Jay plan a haunted house, but things take an unexpected turn. The episode introduces a new ghost to the town of Woodstone – one who is surprisingly the oldest spirit viewers have ever seen, even older than Thor, who has been a ghost for around 1,000 years! Despite this new addition, the episode still delivers plenty of classic Ghosts Halloween fun, including the show’s very first mummy.
Ghosts Season 5’s Halloween Episode Introduces The First Mummy Ghost
The Arondekars are getting ready to open a haunted house at Woodstone Mansion, and Jay’s sister, Bela, thinks it needs a few more spooky decorations. They head down to the basement to find some suitable items, as the previous owners, Hetty and Elias—wealthy collectors from the 1800s—had a habit of buying strange and costly objects. Sam and Jay unexpectedly discover a mummy, which Hetty and Elias had apparently bought during a trip to Egypt simply to show off their wealth.
Trouble starts when Jay opens the box and discovers The Book of the Dead. Using a translation app, he reads it aloud, unknowingly reciting an ancient spell. This releases the mummy’s spirit, and Amunhotep (played by Farhang Ghajar) reveals he’s been trapped for 3,000 years because of a flawed burial ritual. They get along initially, but the situation changes when Amunhotep learns that Hetty, disguised as a woman from Minnesota named Marge, bought his mummy, effectively separating him from his wife.
After Nancy accidentally reveals Hetty’s secret, Amunhotep is enraged to discover she’s the one who ate his toe and disrupted his afterlife. He responds by unleashing a series of plagues on Woodstone Mansion. Just when things seem at their worst – with locusts swarming the house – Amunhotep reanimates his body and sends it after Hetty and Sam. Hetty’s apology manages to calm him down, and Sam offers to help reunite Amunhotep with his wife by placing them both in a museum in Cairo. However, this new ghost proved to be a significant danger.
Amunhotep Introduces A Fascinating Ghost Rule
During Amunhotep’s chaotic Halloween night, the show introduced an interesting new rule about ghosts. It revealed that a spirit could become trapped within their own body, like during a mummification process. This explains how Amunhotep, even while traveling, remained connected to his physical form and couldn’t move freely in his coffin. However, now that he’s free from his bandages, this mummy ghost has more freedom of movement than most of the ghosts in Woodstone.
Recent developments in the “Halloween 5: The Mummy” storyline reveal that Amunhotep is more powerful and less restricted than other ghosts. Though he was trapped within his body for millennia, this seems to have given him the ability to travel freely without the limitations that usually bind ghosts to a specific location. After Sam and Jay release him, he’s able to journey back to Egypt without needing his body or coffin to cross boundaries – a freedom only a few ghosts possess, as most are tied to where they died.
Amunhotep is now among the ghosts able to roam freely, but his abilities work differently than others. Pete’s ability to leave the property came from his days as a travel agent, and he’s encountered other ghosts with similar powers. However, the ritual performed on Amunhotep before his death gave him even greater freedom, and reversing that ritual is what allows him to move around so easily. Though it was an accident, the process could potentially be repeated. In fact, Sam and Jay have unknowingly found a way to recreate Pete’s unusual ghost powers.
Ghosts Season 5’s Newest Spirit In One Of The CBS Series’ Most Powerful
Like all ghosts, Amunhotep has come and gone, and now that he’s rejoined his wife in Egypt, he likely won’t return to Woodstone. However, he was an exceptionally powerful spirit, possessing abilities beyond those of most ghosts. He could actually affect the physical world, unleashing plagues on the mansion – something no other ghost has ever done. For example, he conjured swarms of locusts and rats, while most ghosts can’t interact with anything physical at all.
Amunhotep can control the weather, creating lightning that quickly stops Thor from causing the lights in Woodstone to flicker. He also brings his mummy back to life and sends it roaming around the house. This latest development sets a new, higher standard for what viewers can anticipate from new ghosts in the future. It’s likely that the 3,000 years Amunhotep spent sealed in his tomb contributed to his powers, giving him an undisturbed period to develop incredible abilities.
Although it’s improbable we’ll see another mummy appear on the show soon, it would be interesting to discover if another mummified spirit possessed the same powerful abilities as Amunhotep. However, the story might not be over for this Egyptian character. Given that Amunhotep can travel easily, his wife likely shares this ability too. They could potentially return to Woodstone together, offering an explanation for her different experiences and adding more depth to the show’s mythology.
