Warning: This article includes SPOILERS for Hazbin Hotel season 2, episode 2!
Season 2 of Hazbin Hotel delves into the pasts of fan-favorite characters, and surprisingly, it also offers a solution to a well-known serial killer case. The new season launched with two episodes full of character growth and unexpected plot twists.
As a big fan of Hazbin Hotel, I was really excited about the latest episodes! The first one catches up with what’s happening in Hell a month after the last major event, but the second one is a game-changer – it finally gives us a look at what’s going on in Heaven. And, honestly, I was desperate to know how Sir Pentious was doing after his surprising turn towards good! It’s great to get an update on his redemption arc.
The episode begins with Sir Pentious in chains, being questioned by angels. Fortunately, a new character called the Speaker of God arrives and allows him to explain his past. While sharing his life story, Sir Pentious quietly figures out who one particular serial killer really was.
Sir Pentious’ Backstory Connects To The Jack The Ripper Mystery
Hazbin Hotel took a risk by connecting the character Sir Pentious to a famous, unsolved murder case. In the show, he reveals he used to watch people from his window. One day, he witnessed a man – someone he knew as an important figure in town – kill a woman on the street below.
Instead of reporting what he knew, he was afraid to do the right thing, a serious moral failing. As a result, the killer went on to murder five more women. If Sir Pentious had simply revealed the information, he could have prevented those deaths. Sadly, he never spoke up and died keeping the killer’s identity a secret.
Considering the timing, the crimes committed, the victims, and where they occurred, it’s clear Sir Pentious is alluding to Jack the Ripper, a mystery that remains unsolved even today. People have long wondered who the killer actually was.
Look, as a huge fan of Hazbin Hotel, I found it interesting that Vivienne Medrano said she didn’t want the show or its characters drawing parallels to real-life tragedies. But honestly, that feels a little… complicated. The pilot episode already had Jeffrey Dahmer hosting a cooking show! And even beyond that, the show subtly suggests Baxter was a victim of the Titanic, even if it never says it outright. It’s a bit of a contradiction, and as a viewer, it definitely makes you think.
It’s clear the connection to Jack the Ripper was deliberately included. While Baxter’s death was ambiguous enough to suggest a link to the Titanic without confirming it, the creators made a mistake if they wanted viewers to believe Sir Pentious was referencing a made-up killer. They used actual details from Jack the Ripper’s crimes, which strongly implies a real-world connection.
Hazbin Hotel Season 2 Subtly Points The Finger At Two Real-Life Suspects
Beyond linking Sir Pentious to Jack the Ripper, investigators uncovered two key facts about the killer. They discovered the murderer was a prominent and influential figure—one of Pentious’ clients. While the killer’s identity isn’t publicly known by name, the central mystery appears to be solved.
Looking closer, the requirements actually limit the possible suspects to just two people – Aaron Kominski and Montague John Druitt – though the show creators may not have realized this. Of all the potential Jack the Ripper suspects, only these two match the criteria outlined by Sir Pentious.
Aaron Kominski, believed by some to be Jack the Ripper based on recent evidence, worked as a barber. While we might not think of it today, barbering was a well-respected profession at the time. Barbers served wealthy clients, giving them a degree of social influence. They also performed simple medical treatments, so they would have been interested in new medical tools and techniques.
Montague John Druitt was a lawyer, which meant he held a position of power and influence. While it’s a bit of a leap to suggest he needed inventions like Kominski, he certainly had the financial means to afford new technology.
Even though the show gave us clues about who might be the killer, it’s possible that identifying a real suspect was just luck. The connection to Jack the Ripper was likely on purpose, but I think any hints about who the killer is were probably unintentional.
Hazbin Hotel isn’t interested in realistic crime-solving. Instead, the power imbalances shown seem to highlight Sir Pentious’s fear and why he remains quiet, rather than reveal anything about his character.
Who Could Jack The Ripper Be In The Helluvaverse?
It’s more interesting to consider how the character of Jack the Ripper fits into the ‘Helluvaverse’ than to speculate about the show creators’ real-life beliefs about him – they aren’t experts on the subject. Fans are already buzzing with theories about what Jack the Ripper’s demonic form might be.
Investigators have largely ruled out Val and Zestial as suspects in the Jack the Ripper case. While Val seems to fit the profile – possessing a violent personality and matching the physical description – records show Val died in the 1970s. Zestial, described as an ancient being who speaks and dresses like someone from Shakespeare’s time, is believed to have died centuries before the Ripper committed his crimes.
When it comes to figuring out who the killer might be in the Helluvaverse, Paimon (Stolas’ father), Asmodius from Helluva Boss, and Cain, Adam’s son, are the most likely candidates. Paimon doesn’t have much of a known history, and he matches the profile of Jack the Ripper. Asmodius physically resembles the killer and, as the demon of Lust, could have easily traveled to Earth.
Cain, a figure from the Supernatural universe, is a fan favorite when people speculate about who Jack the Ripper might have been. Interestingly, he’s never physically appeared in either Supernatural or Sherlock, leaving the possibility open that he could be the infamous killer.
Although fans often discuss who Jack the Ripper might be in the worlds of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, it’s possible we haven’t even met his character yet. He could still be introduced in future seasons – seasons 3 or 4 – of Hazbin Hotel, which are already planned.
It’s also possible the serial killer is simply a tool used to move the story forward in Pentious’ narrative, rather than a fully developed character. We’ll need to watch future episodes or seasons of Hazbin Hotel to know for certain.
