Will there be a Red Dead Redemption 3?

Both Red Dead Redemption games are considered all-time classics, so it’s not surprising that people are already talking about a possible Red Dead Redemption 3.

It’s been over seven years since Red Dead Redemption 2 captivated players with the story of the Van der Linde gang.

Since Rockstar is heavily focused on developing GTA 6, which is expected next year, it doesn’t seem like we’ll see a new Red Dead game for quite a while.

But could we get a Red Dead Redemption 3? Here’s what you need to know.

Will there be a Red Dead Redemption 3?

As of the time of writing, Red Dead Redemption 3 hasn’t been confirmed.

In a December 2023 tweet, Roger Clark, the voice of Arthur Morgan, expressed confidence that Red Dead Redemption 3 will eventually be made.

I was really hoping for some news about a potential sequel or DLC, but the creator basically said they have no idea when – or even if – anything like that will happen. What’s even more heartbreaking is they seem pretty firm on the idea that Arthur Morgan’s story is finished, and they don’t want to revisit it. It sounds like his chapter is truly closed, which is tough to hear as a fan!

Dan Houser, a co-founder of Rockstar Games, recently discussed the likelihood of a third game in the series during an appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast. He believes another installment is almost certain, given the series’ enduring popularity.

He does admit, though, that making a third game might actually be disappointing, as the current two Red Dead games already feel like a complete and satisfying story.

We’ll keep this page updated with any new information, but for now, we’re continuing to investigate further.

When could Red Dead Redemption 3 be released?

As a huge fan, the wait between the first Red Dead Redemption and its sequel felt really long – a full eight years, actually! It felt like forever.

Based on that information, it’s unlikely we’ll see a Red Dead Redemption 3 released before 2026.

Rockstar Games has dropped a few clues suggesting we’ll definitely be able to play as a bounty hunter on horseback again in the future.

During last year’s Jefferies Virtual Global Interactive Entertainment Conference, Rockstar CEO Strauss Zelnick strongly suggested that a new Red Dead game is definitely planned.

He thought the latest Bond movie was excellent and wished all movie franchises could be as good. He admitted that very few franchises reach that level, but believes Red Dead Redemption is one of them.

He also cautioned that releasing too many non-sports titles each year could diminish their value, even if the content itself is strong.

We carefully craft our games, striving for exceptional quality. We also strategically release titles less frequently to build anticipation and make each launch feel like a special occasion, as Zelnick explained.

That’s a relief – we didn’t think Red Dead Redemption would be released annually like the FIFA series.

It’s disappointing how long it takes to get new game releases these days. We used to be able to reliably expect a new Grand Theft Auto game every couple of years, but that’s no longer the case.

As soon as anything Red Dead Redemption 3 gets announced, we’ll let you know right here!
