Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts, is now leading the X-Men reboot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and production has begun. While the full team hasn’t been revealed yet, many fans hope Emma Frost will be included. Her portrayal in shows like The Boys and Gen V offers a great example of how to bring this powerful character to life on screen.
Emma Frost hasn’t had a great run in the X-Men movies. After being left out of X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, the actresses who followed – Tahyna MacManus and January Jones – didn’t quite capture the character. MacManus’ portrayal was widely disliked, and while Jones looked the part in X-Men: First Class, she didn’t convey Frost’s personality. Now that the X-Men are joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel has a chance to get Emma Frost right. They could follow a similar path to how Maddie Phillips developed her character, Cate Dunlap, in The Boys and Gen V, finally giving Frost the spotlight she deserves.
How The Boys & Gen V’s Cate Dunlap Can Be Marvel’s Blueprint For Emma Frost

Maddie Phillips played Cate in season one of Gen V, a character with the power to control people by touching them. Initially appearing as a friend to the main group in this The Boys spin-off, Cate was eventually exposed as someone who had been secretly manipulating everyone. She became a full-fledged villain in the season finale, leading a revolt at Godolkin University. Season two of Gen V gave Cate a compelling chance to turn things around, and she’s now a powerful ally once more. This storyline offers an ideal model for how Marvel could develop the character of Emma Frost in the MCU.
Emma Frost first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1980 as the White Queen, a villain associated with the Hellfire Club in The Uncanny X-Men #129. She initially created a team called the Hellions to oppose the X-Men’s New Mutants, and even fought alongside Magneto. Later, after her team Generation X fell apart, she joined the X-Men. Following the devastating events on Genosha in 2001’s E is for Extinction, Emma developed a secondary power: diamond-hard skin. Combined with her existing telepathic abilities, this made her one of Marvel’s strongest and most recognizable mutants, eventually leading her to become a leader of the X-Men.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve been thinking about Cate from Gen V, and it struck me how much she reminds me of Emma Frost. Cate’s tough shell and ability to mess with people’s minds? Total Emma vibes. It really got me hoping Marvel will finally do Emma Frost justice when they bring the X-Men into the MCU. Honestly, the Fox films just didn’t get her. They never really showed the layers – the vulnerability, the drama, the power, or even the, let’s be real, sex appeal – of a character who’s a villain and a hero. Marvel has a real opportunity to tell her story right and bring her comics arc to life on screen.
