Get ready to return to Tracy Island! The classic show Thunderbirds is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and ITV is commemorating the occasion with a special new mini-series, hosted by Scarlett Moffatt of Gogglebox.
Tomorrow, November 6th, 2025, a four-part look back at Thunderbirds, titled ‘Thunderbirds at 60‘, will be released. You can watch it on ITVX, the ITV Retro YouTube channel, and the official Thunderbirds social media accounts.
As a massive Thunderbirds fan myself, I’m so excited about Moffatt’s exploration of International Rescue! He really gets into the show’s history, digging up amazing behind-the-scenes stories and celebrating sixty years of its incredible impact. It’s a fantastic look at why we all love Thunderbirds!
Thunderbirds, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, premiered in 1965 and told the story of International Rescue. This secret, family-operated team traveled the globe saving lives using incredible technology, including the famous Thunderbird vehicles.
As a sci-fi fan, I have to say this series really stands out. It’s famous for its incredibly innovative puppet work – they called it ‘Supermarionation,’ and it was unlike anything else at the time – and its really cool, futuristic look. It wasn’t just a hit here in the UK, it became a worldwide sensation, and honestly, it’s become a cornerstone of British science fiction television. It’s a classic for a reason!

Throughout the new 60th-anniversary Thunderbirds series, Moffatt will be joined by a fantastic group of guests. These include TV personality Anthea Turner, Dee Anderson (the daughter of Thunderbirds creators Sylvia and Gerry Anderson), original puppet operator Mary Turner, Ella Vaday from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, and Jamie Anderson, the CEO of Anderson Entertainment, who is carrying on his father’s creative work.
Moffatt shared his excitement about the project, saying that growing up he loved Thunderbirds and working on this felt like a dream come true. He especially enjoyed learning the behind-the-scenes details and secrets from the original creators, calling the experience fantastic.
Thunderbirds at 60 celebrates the show’s 60th anniversary with a look back at memorable moments – like the famous Tracy Island build on Blue Peter – and explores the unique artistry behind its creation. The program also examines how Thunderbirds continues to impact pop culture and fashion, explaining why it’s still cherished by fans today.
