Naughty Dog, the game studio behind many PlayStation favorites, recently released a video marking its 40th anniversary. The video showcases developers who have contributed to iconic games like Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, the Uncharted series, The Last of Us, and their next project, Intergalactic.
The video mainly highlights Naughty Dog’s past games, but the developers also discussed their plans for the future. Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin emphasized that compelling storytelling will continue to be a priority.
In a recent video, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Rubin expressed his hope that the studio will continue its tradition of creating top-quality, meaningful entertainment and telling the stories it’s passionate about. Alison Mori, studio manager and head of operations, agreed, stating she’s confident the studio will keep delivering amazing, character-focused games that explore what it means to be human.
According to studio head Neil Druckmann, the goal is to create compelling, though imperfect, characters and tell their stories in a way that changes how the audience sees the world.
Naughty Dog’s next game is called Intergalactic, and it’s their first completely new project since The Last of Us came out in 2013. Although we don’t know when it will be released, the studio head has said it’s their biggest, most sprawling, and most costly game to date.
As a huge fan, it’s so exciting to hear Neil Druckmann talk about the new game! He said back in September that development is really going well – they’re ‘firing on all cylinders,’ which is awesome. He’s mentioned before that this project is special, but he really seemed to mean it this time, saying it’s the most ambitious and expansive game Naughty Dog has ever created. Apparently, it might even be their most expensive game to date, and that just shows how much they’re pouring into it! I can’t wait to see what they come up with.
Druckmann mentioned a sequel to Intergalactic could happen if the game does well, but explained that Naughty Dog generally doesn’t make long-term plans. He said the studio—and its culture—thrives when the team is genuinely enthusiastic and passionate about a project, which is when they produce their best work.
Following the positive reception of The Last of Us Part 2, the studio considered beginning development on Part 3. Ultimately, they chose to focus on a new science fiction game called Intergalactic because the team was particularly enthusiastic about creating a fresh sci-fi experience.
The game Intergalactic is in development for PlayStation 5. Neil Druckmann has also shared that he’s reducing his involvement with the The Last of Us TV series to dedicate more time to this new game.
