As an analyst, I’m tracking that Shiro Games is planning a final, major update for their popular Viking RTS, Northgard. They’re calling it Northgard: Definitive Edition, and it’s scheduled to launch on Steam for Windows PC on December 4th, 2025. This looks to be the last significant content addition for the game.
This latest update significantly expands the game by including the Snake, Horse, and Dragon Clan DLC packs directly into the main game, and also adds the Cross of Vidar expansion.
The game now features new areas to explore, including a challenging Valhalla biome that changes up the landscape. Plus, the Bifrost biomes are getting bigger and will be playable in even more ways.
Players who enjoy the game’s visuals will be excited to hear that a digital art book featuring all of the development artwork is also being included. You can watch the reveal trailer for Northgard: Definitive Edition below.
Since its release in 2018, Northgard has sold over 5 million copies. As a thank you to its existing players, the developers are offering a free upgrade to the definitive edition for anyone who already owns the game.
If you already own Northgard, you’ll automatically receive the expansion and three clan DLCs when the Northgard: Definitive Edition releases on Steam for $35 on December 4, 2025 – you won’t need to pay anything extra.
The update will include several bug fixes, the team has announced. Details about exactly what’s been fixed aren’t available yet.
A cool way to send a great game out
Although it’s sad to see updates end, I’m happy the developers are revisiting Northgard with this definitive edition. It’s a truly great game, and stands out from many other real-time strategy titles.
In Northgard, you lead a Viking clan trying to thrive in a harsh new land. The game focuses on building up your settlement through both peaceful trade and military conquest. Managing limited resources is key, as you’ll need to ensure your village survives brutal winters and attacks from creatures inspired by Norse legends.
It might take a little getting used to, but this game is really enjoyable once you figure it out. It plays differently than games like Age of Empires, and if you like the game’s world, I highly recommend giving it a try.
As a researcher exploring Northgard, I’ve found that it offers both solo and multiplayer experiences. You can choose to build and lead your clan on your own, or collaborate with friends in a team-based game.
The team at Shiro Games also created Dune: Spice Wars, another excellent strategy game that doesn’t get enough attention. If you like Northgard, I highly recommend it – especially if you’re in the mood for a desert setting! Like Northgard, it’s a bit different from typical strategy games, focusing on things like secret operations and gathering resources before large-scale battles. Dune: Spice Wars actually builds on many of the ideas the developers first experimented with in Northgard.
