James Gunn’s first chapter of the new DC Universe, appropriately named Gods & Monsters, immediately delivers on its promise. The DCU, through both animation and live-action, has quickly populated its world with a diverse range of creatures – from completely original beings to charming animal sidekicks. This universe is already brimming with fantastical beasts of all kinds.
These characters aren’t just added for show; they’re key to the overall feel of the DC Universe. James Gunn envisions a world that blends classic superhero action with scary and unusual elements. Think giant monsters attacking cities alongside more personal stories about characters grappling with who they are, and even a super-powered dog getting all the attention.
This is just the start of what’s to come. There are still many stories to explore in Chapter 1, including films like The Authority and Swamp Thing. Each of these films promises to introduce even more unusual and fascinating creatures. Under James Gunn’s direction, DCU fans can anticipate plenty of surprises as the universe expands with all sorts of creatures, both large and small, enriching its depth and characters.
Creatures From Superman
Mister Handsome

Mister Handsome is a horribly deformed being created by Lex Luthor as a child. Luthor was trying to engineer the perfect human, but the experiment went terribly wrong.
This creature, weakened by his strange body, is forced to serve as a helper for Lex Luthor in Superman. The disturbing way he looks in this photo on Luthor’s desk, combined with his sad backstory of suffering and being abandoned, makes him a deeply unsettling and memorable character.
Kaiju

The Kaiju is a gigantic, alien monster in Superman with incredible power, causing widespread destruction in Metropolis. It’s unlike other creatures like Starro from The Suicide Squad – this monster is one of a kind, drawing inspiration from classic Japanese monster movies but fitting into the larger, cosmic world of DC Comics.
This massive creature provides a powerful physical challenge for Superman, showcasing an incredible display of force. It also expands the DC Universe by presenting a threat on a truly gigantic scale.
Krypto

Krypto the Superdog is Superman’s dog, also from the planet Krypton. Like Superman, Krypto has amazing abilities – he can fly, is incredibly strong, and has heat vision. This lovable hero, known for his loyalty and playful personality, adds a classic, heartwarming touch to the DC Universe, staying true to his origins in older comic books.
As a movie fan, I always appreciate a good character, and Krypto really delivers. He’s got this awesome combination of strength and unwavering loyalty that makes him instantly likable. Plus, it’s great to have a hero who can bring some much-needed levity to a world often filled with really scary villains.
Cybernetics-Enhanced Monkeys

In the movie Superman, Lex Luthor uses specially enhanced monkeys. These primates have advanced technology implanted in them, and Luthor programs them to spread false information and influence what people think online.
These clever beings blend natural instincts with advanced technology, and Lex uses them to damage Superman’s good name. Their unsettling intelligence and teamwork tap into modern anxieties about being manipulated through technology, making them a truly unusual danger.
Interdimensional Imp

The Interdimensional Imp is a relatively obscure character in DC Comics, but it’s important because it proves the existence of the Fifth Dimension and the beings who live there with the power to warp reality.
During a fight scene in Superman, a strange creature briefly appears in the background. It’s a large, purple being shaped like an eye, with tendrils extending from it.
Although the threat puts the city in danger, Superman, probably having faced similar situations before, casually lets the Justice League take care of it.
Creatures From Peacemaker
The Butterflies

The Butterflies in Peacemaker are alien parasites from a planet that destroyed itself. They come to Earth believing humanity is headed for the same fate and that taking over is the only way to save us. They see the same environmental problems that ruined their world happening here, and feel drastic action is needed.
They invade a person’s body and seize control of their mind, destroying the original personality and inhabiting the body as if it were a disguise.
Eagly

Eagly, the bald eagle and Peacemaker’s devoted sidekick, first appeared in Season 1 of Peacemaker. He’s a trained fighter skilled at spying and attacking. This funny yet fierce bird quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his close relationship with Peacemaker and his unexpected skills in battle.
Eagly is a vital source of comfort and humor for Peacemaker, frequently being the only one who offers him genuine, unwavering support.
Eagly and Peacemaker share a close emotional connection, often shown through Eagly’s warm hugs, which give Peacemaker a rare feeling of true closeness.
Kyphotic Alien

The Kyphotic Alien, first seen in Season 2 of Peacemaker, is a strange, hunched being from another dimension. It appears through portals, and it’s not clear what it wants. Its disturbing appearance and unusual biology suggest a connection to larger, multiversal secrets, bringing a touch of cosmic horror to the DC Universe.
Throughout the show, Christopher Smith comes face-to-face with the creature inside the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, a place that allows travel to different dimensions.
The Kyphotic Alien quickly stepped into the room through a portal from another dimension to get rid of a small, rat-like creature by burning it. It didn’t even acknowledge Peacemaker’s greeting, which led the hero to angrily lash out with an insult.
The Cow

Okay, so let me tell you about the Cow from Peacemaker – it’s seriously one of the most unsettling creatures I’ve ever seen! Basically, it’s this enormous, pale alien – imagine something whale-sized, but… slug-like. It’s the main food source for those creepy Butterflies, and it’s just covered in unsettling details. Think six huge eyes and these tiny, clawed legs. It’s genuinely disgusting, and sticks with you long after you’ve seen it!
This creates a thick, luminous golden liquid that keeps both the Butterflies and the people connected to them alive. Without a regular source of this liquid, the Butterflies wouldn’t survive for more than a few weeks.
Rainbow Creature

In Season 2 of Peacemaker, a powerful creature called the Rainbow Creature is mentioned. This being originates from a volcano and can fire incredibly destructive energy beams. Viewers learn about it when Peacemaker (Christopher Smith) enters the Quantum Unfolding Chamber and sees news reports about his alternate-universe self, The Top Trio, and their fights with different enemies – one of whom is the Rainbow Creature.
As a lifelong movie fan, even a small detail like this gets me excited because it hints at the incredibly rich and strange backstory James Gunn and his team are building into the new DC Universe. It’s clear they’re really digging into the deeper corners of DC lore, and I’m here for it!
Creatures From Creature Commandos
The Bride of Frankenstein

Okay, so picture this: The Bride of Frankenstein is now leading a team called the Creature Commandos. It’s a brilliant move, honestly. She’s not just a powerhouse with incredible strength, but there’s this underlying sadness to her, a real emotional weight. Being brought back to life has given her strength, sure, but it’s also left her with a deep desire to find her place in the world. It adds a fascinating layer to the character, and honestly, it’s a compelling dynamic for the team.
Indira Varma provides the voice for the Bride, a character who blends the atmosphere of classic gothic horror with the challenges of modern warfare. She’s a remarkably strong and emotionally complex leader.
Weasel

Weasel is a strange, human-like character who first appeared in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. It was later revealed that he survived and reappeared in the animated series Creature Commandos.
His fur was tangled and dirty, his eyes wide and unsettling, and he looked very unwell. He acts like a wild animal, driven by instinct, and his story is a sad one, rooted in unfair treatment.
Weasel used to be a man who was friends with a group of kids. When an explosion at their school tragically killed most of them, people wrongly accused him of being responsible, even though he’d actually tried to rescue one of the girls. The trauma of that day and the unfairness of being imprisoned still deeply affect him.
Nina Mazursky

Nina Mazursky is a water-dwelling character and a key part of the Creature Commandos animated show, with Zoë Chao providing her voice. The story follows her journey as she deals with questions of who she is, past difficulties, and trying to find a place where she belongs, despite facing prejudice because of how she looks.
Nina is a unique character brought to life through scientific experimentation, showcasing the DCU’s interest in genetically engineered individuals. Her combination of monstrous strength and intelligence makes her a valuable but complex member of the team. Unfortunately, her story ended tragically in Creature Commandos.
Doctor Phosphorus

I’ve always been fascinated by Doctor Phosphorus from Creature Commandos. He’s this incredible, glowing skeleton, and the story behind him is just tragic. Apparently, a terrible chemical accident not only gave him these amazing radioactive powers, but also left him in constant pain. It’s a really dark origin, and honestly, that internal torment makes him a really unpredictable – and therefore valuable – asset when they need to handle secret missions. He’s a powerful figure, but you really feel for him.
He can use radiation to burn and destroy things, including his opponents. Additionally, his body is naturally much stronger, tougher, and faster than a normal human’s.
Doctor Phosphorus glows with a sickly green and yellow light, a permanent effect from the nuclear accident that transformed him. His body is almost see-through, resembling a skeleton, constantly showing the results of his rebirth.
Eric Frankenstein

Eric Frankenstein, a massive, reanimated being from Creature Commandos, is incredibly strong but also thoughtful. Created from the parts of different people, he struggles to find meaning in a world that fears and rejects him, making him a surprisingly complex character despite his monstrous appearance.
He’s a deeply flawed character, driven by sadness, self-centeredness, and a lack of confidence. These traits come from both his unreturned feelings for the Bride and the fact that his creator left him.
Nosferata

Nosferata, a bat-like vampire appearing in Creature Commandos, has several abilities including flying, increased strength and speed, and the power to heal quickly. She’s a valuable asset to the team during combat missions.
She reimagines the traditional vampire legend, adding a fierce, animalistic edge. Her captivating darkness and hunting-like movements make her a powerful asset to the team.
Khalis

Khalis is an ancient mummy brought back to life as a SHADE agent in Creature Commandos. He uses powers based on ancient Egyptian magic, allowing him to resurrect others. His appearance – wrapped in bandages – and supernatural abilities make him a powerful and unusual fighter against supernatural threats, almost like a walking ancient curse. Being a mummy, Khalis is incredibly strong, tough, and has amazing endurance.
Because he’s undead, he can’t die and can recover from injuries that would kill a normal person.
Khalis is naturally empathetic and can feel the presence of living beings around him. He fights using a staff, which he uses to unleash powerful, magical energy.
King Shark

King Shark, a half-shark, half-human character from The Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos, is a powerful and dangerous being with incredible strength and sharp teeth. Despite his intimidating appearance, he often acts like a child. He’s unpredictable, sometimes helpful and sometimes a danger, but his silly personality makes him surprisingly lovable.
His marine-inspired design draws from DC’s oceanic villains, reimagined with humor.
Congorilla

Let me tell you about Congorilla from Creature Commandos – he’s not your average ape! This golden gorilla is incredibly intelligent, almost human, and packs a serious punch. He’s a fascinating character because he’s both powerfully strong and surprisingly clever, using a mix of brute force and smart tactics on every mission. It’s like his mind is as impressive as his muscles – a truly unique and durable addition to the team. He’s definitely one to watch!
Despite his power, he couldn’t escape the Bride of Frankenstein, who unexpectedly killed him during a fit of rage, using a simple food tray as a weapon.
Clayface

Clayface, a character who will soon have his own movie in the DC Universe, is a frightening creature made of shifting mud. He used to be a horror movie actor, but an accident transformed him into a being able to change his form and perfectly imitate anyone he chooses.
Clayface is a frightening yet sympathetic villain. His shapeshifting abilities and sad history – a ruined acting career – make him compelling. He represents the fear of losing oneself, inspired by classic DC Comics villains.
