Now, Michael Shannon, who played Zod, has spoken about that moment and shared his overall thoughts on the film.
In a recent Vanity Fair interview, Michael Shannon revisited iconic moments from his films, starting with the controversial scene in ‘Man of Steel’ where Superman breaks Zod’s neck. Shannon expressed his general dislike of violence, saying, “I just wish people didn’t kill people, whether they’re aliens or ordinary people.” He explained that director Zack Snyder intentionally created a difficult situation for Superman – forcing him to choose between killing Zod and saving innocent lives. This decision, and Superman’s ultimate act, sparked a lot of debate and discussion.
Shannon shared their enthusiasm for working with Zack and creating the film, dismissing claims that it was simply a job for money. They expressed pride in the movie, believing it has a meaningful message.
The controversial decision to have Superman kill Zod, even to protect others, was upsetting to many fans, and understandably so. However, director Zack Snyder had a specific reason for this choice. He explained in an interview with GQ that Superman had to make that difficult call in that moment, and that occasionally, someone with such great power must make such choices to justify their position.
Snyder explained that Zod was determined to fight to the end. He wasn’t interested in finding a compromise, leaving only two options: defeat Zod or be defeated. According to Snyder, Zod made it clear he would fight until one of them was killed, stating, ‘I will fight until you kill me or I kill you.’ There was no room for a peaceful resolution.
Zack Snyder believed Superman needs to grapple with difficult choices, even ones that are morally gray, to be a believable character. He argued that if Superman avoids tough decisions or only handles scenarios he deems acceptable, he feels inauthentic. According to Snyder, a true hero can’t simply choose when to apply their morals; they must confront all challenges.
James Gunn and Peter Safran are leading a new direction for the DC Universe, but many fans still appreciate the impact of the movie Man of Steel on the Superman story. The latest Superman film offered a fresh, more upbeat feel, while still delivering dramatic and important moments, much like the film before it. The next Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.
