Sony is cracking down on fake PlayStation items, and they’ve recently targeted one seller on eBay.
Game Post, which recently covered the legal dispute between the platform holder and Tencent, reports that a lawsuit was filed on October 24th against a particular seller on the platform.
This legal issue centers around the unauthorized use of trademarks and the sale of fake products. For instance, the company is accused of selling counterfeit PS5 Slim storage bags for $89.50.
The seller has a strong track record, with over 8,100 products sold and an average customer feedback score of 97.3%, according to the manufacturer’s lawyers.
I did a little digging and checked out the user’s account – don’t worry, I won’t share any of their info! – and it turns out that storage bag is no longer available for sale. I’m not sure if that’s because of what happened with this issue, or if it just sold out, but it’s definitely gone!
Sony is taking a firm stance and demanding eBay completely remove the offending storefront. They’re also seeking $2 million in damages for each instance of trademark counterfeiting, plus reimbursement for their legal fees and expenses.
The complaint reads:
The defendant set up an online store, using at least the name ‘Seller Alias,’ to sell counterfeit products to customers without their knowledge. They are trying to hide their identity and the extent of this illegal operation to avoid being held responsible. We believe the defendant lives and/or operates in China or another country with weak trademark laws, or is distributing products from similar sources in those areas.
We believe Sony will likely succeed in stopping this seller, but it’s probably just a temporary fix. We expect other similar sellers will appear, creating an ongoing challenge for the company.
