I was so excited when they first showed off Halo: Combat Evolved and then started hearing about potential remakes, even talk of Halo 7! But honestly, I kept wondering what was going to happen with Halo Infinite. Well, it looks like we finally have an answer – it’s called Operation: Infinite, and it’s going to be the last big update for the game. It’s a bit bittersweet, but I’m glad they’re still supporting it!
During a recent livestream, John Junyszek, a senior community manager, announced that the team is shifting its focus to a new game based on the original Halo: Combat Evolved. He explained that their next big update for Halo Infinite will be the final major content release as they dedicate more time and resources to this new project.
Halo Studios recently told Waypoint they’re still planning to support the game going forward. However, with multiple new Halo games currently in development, the team needs to focus all its efforts on creating those new experiences, and ensuring they meet the high standards that the Halo community expects.
Operation: Infinite is adding a new Operation Pass with over 30 ways to customize your characters, including new weapon designs and five full armor sets. The in-game store, The Exchange, will also get 200 exclusive new customization items, plus popular cosmetics from past Operations and events.
It was expected that support for Halo Infinite would eventually end, particularly after it was no longer used in the Halo Championship Series. However, the news is still disappointing given that the game was originally intended to be the foundation for the future of Halo, as stated by former studio head Chris Lee. While the game had a somewhat rocky start, it was significantly improved with updates that added new maps, modes, and features. Ultimately, it didn’t live up to the initial vision of supporting Halo for the next decade.
The updated version of Halo: Combat Evolved, launching in 2026 for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5, will be the first time a Halo game is available on PlayStation. This remake of the 2001 original includes new features like sprinting and the ability to play the campaign with up to four players together, plus three extra story missions. However, it won’t have any traditional competitive multiplayer modes.
