For years, Adult Swim has been a powerful force in cable television. While popular shows like Rick and Morty and Robot Chicken continue to be successful, many other well-loved animated series haven’t lasted as long. Shows like Metalocalypse, The Venture Bros., and The Boondocks have ended, leaving a gap that needed to be filled. Fortunately, Smiling Friends emerged as a potential replacement, though it almost didn’t get the chance to air on cable television.
Max Simonet, the creator and producer of the animated series Smiling Friends, recently shared how the show almost didn’t get made. He explained that the timing of its initial release around April Fool’s Day and the network needing new content nearly prevented it from happening. Simonet also revealed that the overwhelmingly positive fan reaction was crucial to the show’s success, ultimately leading to its renewal for three seasons. He believes Adult Swim was surprised by how much people enjoyed it and were more willing to support the series because of it.
The End of Smiling Friends?
Even though Smiling Friends is currently airing its third season, Adult Swim has already renewed it for seasons four and five. The current season of Smiling Friends has given us four incredibly funny episodes so far. Thankfully, there are ten episodes planned for this season, meaning we’re just past the halfway point. Whenever Smiling Friends finishes its run, it’s sure to leave a lasting impression on Cartoon Network.
