Superheroes from Marvel and DC Comics rarely stay dead for long. While character deaths used to be huge events in comic books, they happen so often now that they’ve become almost expected. Even though a death might not seem as impactful as it once did, it can still be a significant moment. Often, when a hero dies and comes back to life, it marks an important change for them – perhaps they gain a new ability or develop a completely different way of looking at the world.
Whether a hero is ‘better’ after coming back to life is subjective – it really depends on your perspective. While many heroes die and are resurrected, it’s rarer for them to actually improve afterward, whether through stronger powers, a more compelling personality, or simply better stories. This article looks at seven heroes who genuinely benefited from their return from the brink, becoming something more than they were before.
7. Hulk

Let’s talk about the Hulk, because honestly, that guy has died a lot. But the recent The Immortal Hulk series really blew my mind. It turns out all those deaths aren’t just random; they’re tied to some seriously spooky cosmic forces and this thing called the Green Door. I never expected to see the Hulk connected to the afterlife, or even a dark, demonic version of God, but it was a fantastic twist! And it all stemmed from the fact that he’s repeatedly stared death in the face – and lost. It’s easily one of the most interesting developments in his character in years.
6. Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is renowned as a top fighter in the DC Universe, but she once faced a devastating defeat. During a battle with the demon Neron, he overpowered her and stripped her of her soul. However, this wasn’t the end for Wonder Woman; the gods intervened and transformed her into a goddess of truth. Though this divine form didn’t last forever, Diana returned to life with renewed strength and confidence, ready to continue fighting as a hero.
5. Elektra

Fans of Daredevil will never forget when Matt Murdock’s arch-nemesis killed Elektra using her signature sai. Though a shocking moment, Elektra didn’t stay dead for long. She was brought back to life and continued her complicated relationship with Daredevil. While her character faced some stagnation, Elektra experienced significant growth when she took on the mantle of Daredevil herself. She’s embraced this new path for several years now, moving away from her more violent tendencies and proving she’s dedicated to making a positive impact with her life.
4. Green Lantern

Hal Jordan faced a difficult situation when he died. After unexpectedly becoming the villain Parallax, he redeemed himself with a selfless act during The Final Night. Fortunately, this sacrifice allowed him a second chance, and after a short time as the Spectre, he returned to being a Green Lantern. He fully embraced this opportunity, dedicating himself to the Green Lantern Corps and guiding them through their most challenging times.
3. Superman

Many comic book fans today weren’t around when Superman originally ‘died,’ but they’re all familiar with the story of Doomsday defeating him. Although it was a low point for Superman, this event ultimately helped him become stronger. Since returning to life, he’s faced Doomsday several times and always won. Despite being a shocking moment for fans, Superman’s death was an important step in his growth as a hero.
2. Red Hood

Jason Todd was Robin for a brief period before the Joker killed him. However, a reality-altering event brought him back to life, and he became the Red Hood. He initially struggled with anger and resentment over his death, but has since worked to control his violent tendencies and now collaborates with the Bat-Family to protect Gotham City.
1. Jean Grey

Jean Grey is famous for overcoming death, perhaps more than any other hero. Her story first took a tragic turn during the renowned “Phoenix Saga.” Though she seemingly died in a space shuttle accident, a powerful cosmic entity emerged from the wreckage – a being that appeared to be Jean herself. This wouldn’t be the last time Jean faced death, but it was a pivotal moment that fundamentally shaped her character and future adventures.
