One of the Greatest Fantasy Movies Of All Time Is Back On Netflix (With a Sequel Finally In The Works)

Everyone has that one movie that instantly takes you back to being a kid, right? It doesn’t even have to be a great film, honestly – it’s just pure nostalgia and good vibes. But this movie? This one actually holds up. It’s not just the warm feelings of childhood that make it special; it’s genuinely creative and imaginative. I was surprised by how genuinely spooky it was at times, too. It completely deserves its reputation as a classic fantasy film – it’s just brilliant.

Let’s talk about Labyrinth, which you can now watch on Netflix! This film is a classic from Jim Henson, and it’s about Sarah, a teen who wishes her baby brother away because she’s frustrated – something a lot of people can understand. When her wish actually comes true, she has to venture into a strange and perilous world ruled by the Goblin King, Jareth, to get him back. It’s as wonderfully bizarre as you’d expect, and David Bowie sports an amazing wig the whole time.

A Legacy Film For Henson

While not as scary as The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth offers a more playful and magical take on fantasy. The story follows Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) as she ventures to the castle of the Goblin King (David Bowie) to find her brother. The music is quirky and unusual, with songs like “Magic Dance” perfectly capturing the wonderfully strange world created by Jim Henson. Though not David Bowie’s most famous songs, they’re enjoyable and provide a welcome lightness against the film’s underlying darkness – exactly what Labyrinth needs.

Now that the original film is available for streaming again, talk of a sequel has gone from unlikely to more hopeful. Director Scott Derrickson previously explained that while they developed a script, the studio wasn’t convinced it could be a commercial success. He felt the film’s ambitious and unusual nature made it difficult to produce affordably and that studios might hesitate to invest in something so different. He remained proud of the work they did, however. A year later, Lisa Henson, CEO of the Jim Henson Company, clarified that they were essentially starting over with a new script and director, meaning a sequel wasn’t happening anytime soon and she didn’t want to speculate on a potential release date.

Robert Eggers, the director behind critically acclaimed films like The Northman, The VVitch, and Nosferatu, is currently slated to direct the project. Chris and Eleanor Columbus will also produce. However, a sequel doesn’t seem likely in the near future. Eggers is currently prioritizing Werewulf. He explained earlier this year that he always has multiple projects in development to navigate the film industry, but his next film will be an original story.
