Here is an overview of the game, via Koei Tecmo:
About
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly is a complete remake of the 2003 horror game. It tells the story of twin sisters who get lost in a deserted village filled with angry ghosts. To survive, they use a special camera called the Camera Obscura, which can capture and trap these spirits as they uncover the mysteries of the village.
The game has been completely revamped, with improvements to the graphics, sound, gameplay, and controls. The core Camera Obscura feature – used for capturing and fighting ghosts – is still central to the experience, and is now more immersive during both exploration and battles. A new mechanic, “Holding Hands with Mayu,” has also been added, letting players feel a stronger connection between the two sisters.
Story
Twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura visit a stream they remember from their childhood memories.
A dam is about to flood the area, and as Mio remembers the past, her sister Mayu is lured away by a bright red butterfly. It leads her towards a legendary village that’s disappeared from all maps.
This village is haunted by angry spirits seeking the twin girls who escaped a dangerous ceremony. It’s a place where night never ends.
While attempting to locate Mayu and leave the village, Mio unwittingly repeats a tragic pattern from the past.
Okay, so I’m playing as Mio, and I just dug up some seriously messed up stuff in the village. I finally figured out what that ‘forbidden ritual’ everyone keeps warning about actually is, and honestly, I wish I hadn’t. It’s way darker than I expected.
