Month over month, it was just the PlayStation 5 that experienced sales growth in May, while both the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S witnessed a significant drop in spending.
Certainly! Given the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, it’s not surprising that people were less interested in its predecessor, leading to a significant 44% decrease in sales. This large drop makes sense in this context.
Personally, I’ve noticed a steady drop in Xbox’s performance annually, which was significantly exacerbated when Microsoft raised the price of their consoles in the U.S. back in May. Consequently, spending on the Series X|S dropped a substantial 30%.
Based on the recent analysis by research company Circana, as highlighted by the reliable source Mat Piscatella, the following findings have emerged: The PlayStation 5 experienced a 3% rise in consumer spending and was the top-selling platform in terms of both unit sales and revenue.
In May, Elden Ring: Nightreign reigned supreme among software releases, outranking DOOM: The Dark Ages. Interestingly, despite this success, FromSoftware’s multiplayer-focused adventure didn’t make it into the top ten best-sellers for 2025 so far, settling for the 11th spot instead.
It’s noteworthy that although Xbox is still grappling with hardware issues, its multi-platform software strategy appears robust. In fact, four out of May’s top five best-selling games were from Microsoft. These include DOOM: The Dark Ages, Forza Horizon 5 (which has experienced a surge in popularity due to its PS5 version), The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
Without a doubt, everyone will eagerly await Circana’s upcoming report, given that the Switch 2 was launched on the 5th of June. The coming months are bound to bring significant changes.
