Korean webcomics, known as manhwa, are becoming incredibly popular worldwide. Their popularity has surged over the last ten years, boosted by the growing number of manhwa series being turned into anime. This trend really took off with the huge success of Solo Leveling, which became more popular than many well-established action and fantasy series. Solo Leveling didn’t just make light novels and webtoons more popular in the West; its anime adaptation also created a lot of excitement for manhwa in general. While Solo Leveling is a prime example, other manhwa have also been successfully adapted into anime, including Tower of God and True Beauty.
Webtoon, launched in 2004 by the South Korean company Naver, is a popular platform for digital comics. While it features comics from around the world – including Chinese manhua and Japanese manga – the majority of its most popular series are Korean manhwa, and their popularity continues to grow. Recently, Webtoon partnered with Warner Bros. to create adaptations of ten of its webcomics, as reported by Variety.
Warner Bros. and Webtoon’s Execs Share Major Updates on the Collaboration
As reported by Variety, Webtoon and Warner Bros. Animation are partnering to create new anime series, though the project is still in its initial stages. Yongsoo Kim, head of global strategy at Webtoon Entertainment, explained that this collaboration will allow them to expand popular stories created for Gen Z audiences with the help of a leading animation studio.
Sam Register, who leads Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, said combining the animation expertise of Warner Bros. with Webtoon’s engaging stories is a fantastic opportunity to create something truly unique.
Kim also emphasized the exciting partnership, stating, “We’re demonstrating that amazing stories can begin on mobile devices and become worldwide entertainment successes, as seen with popular titles like ‘True Beauty,’ ‘Clevatess,’ ‘Tower of God,’ and many other adaptations currently in development.”
Only four projects have been officially confirmed and are currently in early development, so details haven’t been released yet. These include anime adaptations of popular Webtoon series like The Stellar Swordmaster by Hong Dae Ui, Juno and Q10, Hardcore Leveling Warrior by Sehoon Kim, Down to Earth by Pookie Senpai, and Elf & Warrior by AC Stuart and Victor Rosas II – all of which have been very successful on the platform. The partnership between Webtoon Entertainment and Warner Bros. was just announced, so information is limited, but they are likely to share more updates with fans as additional projects are confirmed.
