A rumor suggests we’re getting new information about a possible third Doctor Strange movie, including when it might come out and how production is progressing. While Marvel hasn’t officially announced a third solo film for Benedict Cumberbatch’s character, fans have been speculating. There was hope it could arrive before the end of the current Multiverse Saga, but that seems unlikely now that a planned 2027 Marvel movie has been removed from the schedule.
While a third Doctor Strange movie is still just a hope for Marvel fans, recent reports suggest progress may be happening. Nexus Point News claims that Marvel Studios is currently in the early stages of developing Doctor Strange 3.
The publication also reported that filming for the project is likely to begin after Avengers: Secret War finishes, supporting the idea that the third Doctor Strange movie will be among the first Marvel Studios films made after the Multiverse Saga concludes.
Sources say Michael Waldron, the writer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and director Sam Raimi are not likely to be involved in the next Doctor Strange movie.
Reports suggest that Benedict Cumberbatch will play a larger role in developing the next Doctor Strange film, including helping to find a new director and writer. While Nexus Point News speculated that Sam Mendes, known for 1917 and Skyfall, might be a possibility, his current commitment to directing four films about The Beatles makes it improbable he’ll take on Doctor Strange 3.
Doctor Strange 3 Is Still a Ways Away… But How Far?

It’s been over three years since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came out, and with no sign of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange appearing in the next two Avengers films, a third Doctor Strange movie from Marvel Studios is long overdue.
At the end of Multiverse of Madness, Benedict Cumberbatch’s character, Stephen Strange, was left in a surprising situation. After traveling through the Multiverse, he gained a third eye and was approached by Clea (Charlize Theron), who seemed to have a new mission for him.
In January, Cumberbatch mentioned that talks were underway regarding the future of his character. Although he didn’t officially confirm a third Doctor Strange movie, he suggested he’d be open to revisiting the role.
Considering the major changes expected in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars movies, it would be logical for the franchise to revisit one of the few heroes known for traveling between realities soon after. This would allow audiences to see how he’s coping with the universe being essentially reset.
Filming for Avengers: Secret Wars is anticipated to finish around late 2026 or early 2027. If the upcoming Strange movie begins filming right after, a new Doctor Strange film could potentially start production as early as mid-2027. Assuming everything stays on schedule, a release in 2028 or 2029 seems likely.
We’re optimistic that we can secure a writer and director to start working on Doctor Strange 3 soon after the current Multiverse Saga finishes, allowing for a relatively quick release.
