Nicolas Cage Reuniting With Director of 28-Year-Old Cult Sci-Fi Film for New Gangster Movie

As a huge Nicolas Cage fan, I’ve seen pretty much everything he’s been in, and there are a few films everyone agrees are just brilliant. So, I was thrilled to hear he’s working with the director of one of my all-time favorite Cage sci-fi action movies! It’s been nearly three decades since they last teamed up, and honestly, the news has the fanbase buzzing. It’s amazing to see Cage having such a comeback – after a period of doing mostly direct-to-video films, he’s really being celebrated as a true Hollywood icon again. Plus, the story they’re tackling seems like the perfect fit for both of their talents; I have a feeling this one is going to be special.

Nicolas Cage and director John Woo, who famously worked together on Face/Off, are teaming up again after 28 years. According to Deadline, their new movie, Gambino, will tell the story of Carlo Gambino, a powerful crime boss in New York City. The film will chart Gambino’s life, from his humble beginnings as a butcher’s son in Sicily to his eventual control of New York’s criminal underworld.

The script for a new film, written by George Gallo (known for the Bad Boys movies) and Academy Award-winner Nick Vallelonga (Green Book), is being offered for sale this week at the American Film Market. Nicolas Cage is set to star as Carlo Gambino, the powerful mob boss who controlled New York City’s criminal underworld until his death. The film will tell Gambino’s story through the eyes of journalist Jimmy Breslin, who interviewed those close to him to reveal the man behind the notorious reputation. The Gambino crime family held significant power in New York for more than half a century.

Nicolas Cage & John Woo Make for an Interesting Reunion

The biggest news about this new movie is that Nicolas Cage and director John Woo are working together again! Their 1990s action film, Face/Off, is still a fan favorite. The movie starred Cage as the terrorist Caster Troy and John Travolta as FBI agent Sean Archer. The plot revolves around a futuristic procedure where, after Caster falls into a coma, Sean undergoes a surgery to wear Caster’s face and infiltrate a dangerous plot. Once Caster recovers, he demands the same procedure, swapping his face with Sean’s, and then sets out to ruin the agent’s life.

This film gave Nicolas Cage a great opportunity to showcase his signature dramatic style in a thrilling action movie directed by John Woo. It was Woo’s third American project after transitioning from Hong Kong, following Hard Target and Broken Arrow. Since 2003’s Paycheck, Woo hadn’t directed many films in America, returning to Asia before coming back in 2023 with the action films Silent Night and a remake of his classic, The Killer.

It’s intriguing that Nicolas Cage and John Woo are working together again. Fans are hoping Woo can recapture the magic of his classic films like The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992). Given the film’s mafia setting, Woo doesn’t need to focus heavily on action, but audiences expect him to deliver his best work, especially with Cage, who consistently proves he’s a captivating performer.
